EastEnders' legend Barbara Windsor has boozer named after her – in a care home

Barbara Windsor has had a pub inside a care home named after her.

Pensioner residents voted to name their on-site bar The Windsor Arms in memory of Dame Babs.

They originally voted to call their newly completed boozer the Welcome Inn.

But they agreed to name it after the Carry On and soap icon – who played landlady Peggy Mitchell – after she died.

The nation mourned after Dame Barbara, 83, passed away on December 10 after battling Alzheimer’s.

Photos taken before pubs were ordered to shut for the third lockdown show pensioners pulling pints in The Windsor Arms, beside care home workers in PPE.

Residents at Camelot House and Lodge in Taunton, Somerset, said it was a fitting tribute to name it after her because of her time behind the bar at the Queen Vic.

Richard Dempslake, activities coordinator for the home, said: “Our residents loved Barbara as the bubbly star of Carry On films and the outspoken Eastenders lady at The Queen Vic.

“And were really enthusiastic about memorialising her in this way.”

Local businesses made generous donations to help create an authentic atmosphere at the pub, donating cider, glasses, tables and beer mats.

Camelot House and Lodge provides specialist care for people living with dementia, a condition which also affected Dame Barbara who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and campaigned to raise awareness of the disease in her later years.

After Dame Barbara died, her husband Scott Mitchell said: “Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life.
“Full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.

“It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserves.

“I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.”

Scott Mitchell has called for greater government funding for research into Alzheimer’s and dementia, and care for those with the conditions.
