Emmerdale Anthony Quinlan's life away from show – Gladiators stint to famous ex

Hunky soap actor and fitness fanatic Anthony Quinlan appeared on ITV’sThe Chase last night in an Emmerdale celebrity special.

Anthony, 36, joined his former co-stars Louisa Clein, James Moore and Dominic Brunt, as they faced The Chasers in a bid to win money for their chosen charities.

As the first team member to take on The Chaser, Anthony appeared nervous and revealed he’d been practicing his general knowledge on The Chase app.

Anthony is best known for his work as Pete Barton, a character introduced to Emmerdale in late 2013, before leaving the show 2020: but what else is he known for?

Going back to the beginning of his career, Anthony rose to fame playing the part of Gilly Roach in Hollyoaks. Despite this being his first paid acting gig, Anthony would go on to play this role for six years; from 2005 – 2011.

Anthony is originally from Salford, an ideal fit for the role of Mancunian Gilly Roach.

After a long-running storyline which saw Jacqui McQueen accuse Gilly of rape, the character was finally written off the show, following Anthony’s decision to quit in 2011.

He took a brief hiatus from TV screens before returning to soaps in 2013; this time as a member of the Barton family in Emmerdale.

During his time on the cast of Emmerdale, Anthony was nominated for the “Sexiest Male” award at the 2014 British Soap Awards.

Outside of acting, Antony greatly enjoys sports and fitness, and is a qualified personal trainer and Crossfit trainer.

This will come as no surprise for avid Emmerdale fans, who will remember his impressive physique during topless appearances on the show.

Anthony regularly posts health and fitness advice on his Instagram, most of which include workout videos. During lockdown, Anthony posted fitness tips and tricks, as well as sharing clips of his home workouts.

Presumably intended to inspire and motivate his followers to keep exercising throughout lockdown, the posts attracted plenty of admirers, many of whom flooded the comments section with compliments and love-struck face emojis.

Anthony’s love of fitness was a passion he shared with former girlfriend and Strictly Come Dancing talent, Dianne Buswell.

Speaking with the Daily Star at the time, Anthony revealed: “We’re still really good friends – it’s just distance played a part.”

Unlike his ex, Anthony has never been on Strictly, but his stint in this recent episode of The Chase is not his first time appearing on TV as a contestant.

He has also taken part in several famed British gameshows such as All Star Family Fortunes and Gladiators, both of which were just as popular as The Chase in the early noughties.

When looking back at his time on Gladiators, Anthony poked fun at his appearance in head to toe Lycra by posting a photo of his outfit online.

Although evidently nervous and choosing to “pass” his fair share of questions, Anthony did appear to enjoy his time on The Chase.

Host Bradley Walsh quickly got Anthony to relax into his latest role as Contestant Number One, which resulted in a £5,000 win for the Emmerdale team in the first round.
