Emmerdale veteran Eric Pollard (played by Chris Chittell) left fans scratching their heads during tonight’s first episode when his brakes failed.
The longtime character was rushing Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) to the hospital after realising she was going into labour.
But when Eric’s breaks stopped working, rather than taking the car down to a lower gear he slammed on the hand brake straight away.
Travelling at high speed down a country road, Eric’s vehicle skidded and swerved, as a panicked Tracy screeched in the backseat.
Flocking to Twitter to berate Eric for his handling of the unexpected turn of events, viewers were flabbergasted.
“Wow, could the car scenes look any faker? #Emmerdale,” one person asked.
“Omg, leave the handbrake alone, that’s the most stupid thing to do Eric… #emmerdale,” another said in disbelief.
A third viewer joked: “Lol, all those years of driving and Pollard can’t do a handbrake turn properly. #Emmerdale.”
While a fourth exclaimed: “Well done @emmerdale for giving all the idiots the wrong idea of what to do when your breaks don’t work … obviously changing to a lower gear doesn’t make good telly, nah just go straight for the hand break! Jesus #emmerdale.”
“Eric gear down slowly apply the hand brake #Emmerdale,” a fifth fan advised, clearly unimpressed.
“Eric not try engine braking or gently pulling the handbrake to slow it rather than wrench the s**t outta it,” another viewer added.
The plot thickens as Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) told Moira Dingle (Natalie J. Robb) he and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) had messed with the brakes on a car her brother had stolen.
Cain happened upon a car wreck surrounded by police and ambulances, and the truth was clearly dawning that it could be his fault.
Fans will have to hope Tracy and Eric make it out alive.
Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.
