I'm A Celeb castle UFO encounters – 1892 spot, underwater alien base and ancient links

Gwrych Castle has seen some sights over the years – not least of which a fair few rows involving music producer Naughty Boy.

But it appears the North Wales historic landmark might have seen its fair share of extraterrestrial encounters too – as the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! venue is said to be a UFO hotspot.

The first sighting allegedly dates all the way back to 1892. Pieced together by investigator Russ Kellett for the Rhyl Journal, lights in the sky were initially seen by men transporting logs to the coast in horse-drawn wagons.

Contemporary reports said the men were by the castle gates when a light from the direction of the castle shone down on them “like a beam from a lighthouse”.

Russ said the men heard “a humming noise that got louder and louder”, before seeing a “metal disc or object going over them and a blinding light”.

Witnesses called the event “demonic”, and one recalled he thought “hell had opened up” beneath him.

The group ran for their lives and sheltered at the Abergele-based Bee Hotel.

But that isn’t the only UFO sighting around Abergele.

Nearby Conwy, Russ warned, is a “corridor” of alien activity – and celebrities taking shelter in the castle should take care not to be abducted.

A show insider told Daily Star back in 2020: “The celebs will be braced for horrible trials and wet weather.

“But they could get something far more terrifying – an alien invasion. Producers have picked an area that has had numerous unexplained sightings.”

They continued: “If there are any extra-terrestrial visitors, it will certainly make for good telly.”

In 1988, three joggers reported seeing a flying saucer hovering in the sky over Dwygyfylchi village in North Wales – while a decade later, a retired police officer said he said a spaceship above Abergele on three separate evenings.

And just 28 miles away on Puffin Island, Anglesey, experts have even suggested there could be an underwater alien base where extraterrestrials go to hang out.

Speaking to North Wales Live, a representative of The UFO Investigations and Research Unit – based in Shrewsbury – said numerous sightings have taken place there.

Phil Hoyle told the publication: “Many witnesses, some ex-military and professional people, have witnessed unconventional lights entering or leaving the sea around Puffin Island.”

He explained that back in January 1974, large, structured objects were seen leaving the sea close to the island, with similar sightings dotted throughout more recent history.

Phil added: “The people who have contacted us have all been unrelated, but have all told us the same things.”

A 1977 incident at the island made headlines when primary school pupils spotted an object hovering over the island, as Phil said there was an 80% increase in UFO activity “over ancient sites compared to anywhere else”.

That would make Gwrych Castle, then, a likely candidate for alien lifeforms.

And modern day phenomena can’t explain everything away – though a line of ‘UFOs’ back in 2020 over North Wales and the castle had a much simpler explanation.

Mysterious white lights were spotted in the sky around North Wales just before New Year last year, with witnesses even snapping pictures of the bizarre phenomena.

One witness said they saw a “straight line of 20-30, all uniform distance apart” – and though some tried to rationalise their visions as seeing planes flying through the sky, the answer was a lot more high-tech.

Experts revealed the lights were a new fleet of satellites launched by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX – which launched 60 of the satellites into orbit as part of the Starlink programme.

Of course, Wales’ most infamous encounter – dubbed the Roswelsh Incident – happened just a two hour drive away at the Berwyn Mountains.

It’s so famous it has its own Wikipedia entry, which claims that in January 1974, residents of the area reported a loud noise and bright light in the sky.

UFOlogists claim the UK government quickly covered up the incident – though declassified Ministry of Defence files state it was simply a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurring at exactly the time a meteor shot through the sky.
