James Argent shares plan to swim from Europe to Africa after gastric surgery

James Argent has revealed his plans for an ambitious open water swim.

The former TOWIE star is recovering from life-threatening gastric band surgery.

And once he’s fully recovered, the 33-year-old reality TV star has vowed to swim from Europe to Africa – or even attempt the English Channel.

Arg appeared on Loose Women to update the show on how his recovery was going following his emergency operation.

And the popular TV personality revealed he is “feeling happier” since the op and having lost some much-needed weight having ballooned in size.

“I do have huge aspirations, I don’t want to make you all laugh, but I do want to swim from Europe to Africa,” he revealed to the ITV panel.

“And I do want to swim the English Channel. If I can beat addiction, if I can beat an eating disorder… then why not? Anything’s achievable.

“I’m so pleased, sitting here today, two-and-a-half weeks after the operation, gradually weight is coming off each and every day.

“I’m going on long walks, I’m feeling happier, I’m feeling healthier, I’m starting to feel like my old self again. I think I definitely made the right decision. This is really going to be a positive new chapter for me. I’m buzzing.”

Arg has battled drug and drink problems throughout a turbulent career having found fame on TOWIE.

But he has embraced a healthier lifestyle and loves swimming as he continues to shed the pounds.

And he hopes his gastric band op with help him shrink in size and hopefully, one day, mount the serious challenge of swimming 14.4km (8.9miles) through the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa in Spain to Morocco.

The swim, one of the most common routes from Europe to Africa, can be done in five hours, although Arg will undoubtedly just be happy to complete the ambitious challenge after all of his health problems.

But the TV personality has revealed he is keen to find love again following his painful – and well-publicised – split from TOWIE star Gemma Collins.

“I’m fortunate enough, I’ve worked hard over the last 11 years, I have a lovely family home in Essex, but I’m the only one living in it,” he explained.

“[But] yeah, I would love to meet someone. I would love to start a family. I feel that not only am I in a place I can look after myself now, I’m also in a place where I truly feel I could look after and take care of a lady and take care of a child.

“So that would be the dream for me.”
