Jeremy Kyle has opened up for the first time since his hit ITV show was cancelled after the suspected suicide of a former guest.
The Jeremy Kyle Show was suddenly pulled off the air back in 2019 following the death of guest Steve Dymond died just days after he appeared on the show.
The 56-year-old broadcaster has now revealed he has been battling severe anxiety and depression when his mental health took a massive blow since Steve’s sudden death.
The father-of-four admitted his depression got to a point where he couldn’t “leave the house or open the curtains” following his downward spiral while on the show.
Jeremy, who is engaged to his supportive partner Victoria, told The Sun how he struggled to understand why celebrities opened up about their struggles with mental health until he battled with his own.
He told the publication: “I’m not asking for any sympathy, but being completely honest, yes, it was a very difficult time.
“I was completely devastated at first and then I became completely demotivated. Every ounce of energy seemed to have gone and I just couldn’t bring myself to leave the house or even open the curtains.
“After Vic encouraged me, I eventually did go to the doctor because of how low I was feeling – and I’ve never done that in my life. But it was the only way I could get myself through.”
Since the show was taken off the air, reviews were held by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee who ultimately decided it was best to cancel the show altogether.
A swarm of questions came from MPs which asked about the aftercare and support provided to the guests after they appeared on the show.
And it appears that the downfall of his advice show was the last straw for TV presenter who admitted that it pushed him over the edge after a string of other things went wrong.
Jeremy’s downfall first began in 2013, when the American version of the Berkshire-native’s hit show was cancelled.
Following that disappointment, the TV star was then diagnosed with cancer, went through a public divorce, lost his mother and then his show in the UK.
It was then that the loving father finally sought treatment for his mental health and managed to pull himself out of his dark depression.
The Jeremy Kyle Show had been on air for 17 series when Mr Dymond sadly died before his episode was due to air.
During the episode, he took a lie detector test to prove he had been loyal to his partner but failed to pass the test.
It was later revealed that the construction worker died of a morphine overdose, and suffered from an underlying health problem.
Since his tragic death, his family has claimed that his appearance on the ITV programme was one of the main causes behind his sudden death and claimed the show was too much for him to cope with.
Jeremy is set to return to broadcasting with his weekday drivetime show on talkRADIO later on this year.
