Kevin Hart's Fatherhood film is based on devastating true story of author

Fatherhood remains Number 1 in the UK today according to Netflix charts, as it sees Matthew Logelin (Kevin Hart) portray the heartbreaking story of being a single dad after his wife died in childbirth.

Many found the film emotive while it pulled at heartstrings and pushed forward a comedic edge, but for some, the story was all too real.

Matthew Logelin, the author of Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love, has discussed the loss of his wife in extensive detail – and it has since been captured on the big-screen with Kevin Hart playing the US author.

The story surrounds the loss of Matthew Logelin’s partner of 12 years Liz, and follows Matthew’s struggles to bring up his daughter by himself while honouring the legacy of his late wife.

With a supportive community of close friends and family around both him and Maddy, Matthew Logelin retold his story of bringing up his young daughter, and finding love and happiness amid devastation and loss.

Prior to his book release, Matthew told his story on his blog, sharing updates about navigating the loss of his wife and dealing with a newborn.

Within the film, you see Matthew’s close friends showering him with support, Maddy’s first day at school, and even the introduction to a new love interest, Lizzie.

In the film’s press notes as detailed by Decider, Matthew Logelin said that Kevin Hart did an incredible job with capturing the pain he went through after his wife died.

He said: “It’s really hard to convey something like that and I haven’t seen it too many times in film. Kevin did an incredibly job with it. He’s known as a comedian but his serious side really comes out here.”

Matthew also said that the universal themes remained in the film, which was the important thing about the movie.

“What’s important is that there are universal themes. There’s love and happiness, and sadness and death, and that’s what remains,” he said.

“You can change everything about this movie as long as you keep those sentiments.”

Earlier this month, Kevin appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show with Matthew in the lead-up to the film release.

On the show, Matthew said that writing his book supported him in his healing process and explained how he was excited for a larger audience to see his story.

Fatherhood is out on Netflix and is available to watch now.
