Lorraine viewers emotional as TV star Nicky Campbell talks mental health battle

Lorraine viewers were overcome with emotion on Thursday as television presenter Nicky Campbell candidly opened up about his brave mental health battle.

Good Morning Britain star Ranvir Singh is filling in for Lorraine Kelly on her ITV talk show this week.

The 43-year-old Strictly Come Dancing star chatted to Long Lost Family host Nicky, 59, about his experience of dealing with a bipolar diagnosis and how his dog, Maxwell, helped him through it.

Viewers rushed to their keyboards to praise Nicky for speaking so honestly during the emotional interview.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “@NickyAACampbell wow! amazing, moving and refreshingly honest and open interview on Lorraine.

Nicky Campbell left Lorraine viewers reaching for the tissues on Thursday as he chatted to temporary host Ranvir Singh about his bipolar diagnosis

“I’m adopted too and found my birth parents which is a healing process in itself. Partly worked out good, partly didn’t.

“I totally resonate with you. Will be buying this book for sure.”

Another added: “@NickyAACampbell what a wonderful human you are, very touching interview, and I’m so glad you have Maxwell. Thank you for speaking up for the animals.”

While a third fan posted: “An utterly lovely interview on Lorraine this morning with @NickyAACampbell speaking from the heart about his life. I can’t wait to read this book.”

“Nicky Campbell talking on Lorraine right now, so heartwarming, so brave. Really touched me,” a fourth person wrote.

A sixth social media user said: “What a fantastic interview with #nickycampbell on @lorraine this morning. Terribly moving. What a brave man.”

Nicky spoke to Ranvir candidly about his public breakdown outside Euston Station in 2013, which he discusses in detail in his new book.

He said: “Over the last 11 years on Long Lost Family people have been so honest with us, amazingly honest, it’s just the most incredible thing to have been involved in and I’ve met so many birth mothers.

“It’s helped me understand my birth mother, so many adopted mothers, so many adopted children like myself and I just thought, they’ve been honest with us, it’s my turn in a sense to be completely honest. And if you’re going to talk about this stuff you can’t be sparing.”

He emotionally continued: “Just thinking about it now, I’ll try and get through the sentence, just dropping to my knees when everything got on top of me, outside Euston Station and just sobbing.

“Then I was diagnosed as bipolar. We’ve got to talk about this stuff.

“The wonderful thing about my love of animals is, I got home and my wife Tina said, ‘Come home, come back to your family, come back to me and come back to Maxwell [the dog]’ and I just always had this connection with dogs. He’s my therapist.”

Nicky later addressed whether working on Long Lost Family helped with his own birth mum meeting.

He said: “I met so many people and experienced all of those emotions, birth children, adopted mothers, it was fantastic.

“For me, people come to Long Lost Family and they say you’ve really helped us and it’s really helped people and it’s changed lives.

“That programme changed my life and has changed my life utterly as it’s concentrated my mind on everything that I’d gone through before. People taught me so much.”

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am
