Mary Berry 'perfectly happy' waiting three hours for ambulance after breaking hip

Mary Berry had to undergo surgery earlier this year after breaking her hip following a fall.

The former Great British Bake Off judge waited for around three-and-a-half hours for the ambulance to arrive to take her to hospital after she “went down really hard”.

Mary, 86, said she “went down really hard” while she was picking flowers in her garden and ultimately had to undergo surgery and stay in hospitals for 10 days after the fall in August.

Initially thinking she had injured her knee, she called for help from her husband Paul who was inside the house, but when he didn’t answer she turned to her son-in-law who immediately called an ambulance.

They were warned there would be a lengthy wait involved, but Mary was happy to do so.

She told Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine: “We waited for three-and-a-half hours, until 6pm, and quite right too! I was perfectly happy.”

When paramedics showed up to take her to hospital, she confessed her husband was shocked to see them, particularly as she was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital straight away.

It was confirmed upon her arrival that she had broken her hip, with one of her feet turning out, but she went into surgery just the next day.

Mary added: “I didn’t get a shiny new hip. They just repaired the old one and popped it back in,” and she’s since been using a stick in the hopes of “walking in a straight line”.

The former GBBO star was a fan-favourite until she opted to leave the show out of loyalty to the BBC.

In an interview with The Radio Times in 2017, she said: “It was the BBC’s programme, it grew there. So I decided to stay with the BBC, with Mel and Sue.

“It was suggested what would happen if I did go to Channel 4, what I would get, the advantages, but I didn’t ever have a meeting with them.

“I’d made up my mind, to me, it’s an honour to be on the BBC. I was brought up on it.”

Aside from her TV career, she’s been incredibly successful, particularly with the release of her various cookery books which have sold over 5million copies across the board.
