Twenty-two years ago, the iconic Mary-Kate and Ashley film Passport to Paris was released and put the French capital on the map as a must-visit vacay spot for all the teeny-boppers watching.
The hit film that followed the Olsen twins gallivanting around Paris made us all want to find love in the most romantic city in the world – albeit their very cheesy perception of it.
But where are the girls now, you ask? If you haven’t seen them pop up for a while then it’s not that you’re out of the showbiz loop, it’s that they’ve removed themselves from the spotlight – for the majority.
Let’s take a closer look into their tragic timeline…
What happened?
Well, the now 35-year-old twins had a huge fan base globally and were arguably the most famous twins known to the showbiz sphere.
With tonnes of films, TV shows, fashion lines, books and magazine deals all about them, the stars had built a fully-fledged brand that sent young girls wild all around the world.
Forbes even ranked them as the 11th-richest women in entertainment, back in 2007, with an estimated net worth of £72million at the time.
But the idols of millions didn’t always stay picture-perfect, with cracks beginning to show when they got into their late teens.
After being thrust into the spotlight when they were babies, after starring in sitcom Full House at just nine months old, the girls eventually got fed up with being the centre of attention and hoped for a more normal life.
They went off to university, attending NYU, but ended up leaving due to their peers often selling stories on them and invading their privacy.
Instead, they embarked on a new career path and began their very own fashion house, The Row, which reportedly rakes in over £100m every year.
The twins also run other successful clothing lines; Elizabeth and James, Olsenboye, and StyleMint.
With their acting, business and fashion earnings combined, Mary-Kate and Ashley have an estimated net worth of around £183million each, so there was no need for them to remain in the public eye.
In 2012, they announced they were retiring from acting to focus on their fashion label and haven’t looked back since.
They have both chosen to stay off social media and are incredibly private about their personal lives.
You may still see them make a rare appearance on a red carpet, but that’s about it for the girls, who now let their younger sibling, Marvel actress Elizabeth Olsen, soak up the attention.
Nowadays, they reside in luxurious New York townhouses and have both, unfortunately, faced their fair share of heartache.
Having been reportedly addicted to coffee aged just 10, it seemed the pressure of constantly being in the spotlight had an overall detrimental effect.
Before turning into recluses, the girls were pictured smoking and drinking heavily and were hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons.
After being reportedly carried out of Oasis’s dressing room after one too many and almost throwing up on Penelope Cruz at Naomi Campbell’s 35th birthday bash, the girls knew it needed to stop.
After this, they both ended up embarking on relationships with much older men, which didn’t end great either…
Mary-Kate
Mary-Kate notoriously had the tougher end of the stick as it was heavily publicised that she battled with anorexia and entered rehab as a teen in 2004.
People reported that Mary-Kate’s loved ones had to stage an intervention which led to her going to a treatment facility.
Mary-Kate never publicly confirmed she had an eating disorder, but did tell Elle: “Look, I think it’s important that what anybody goes through – and I’m not saying that it’s true or not true – you realise it’s part of growing up.
“Everybody is going to go through hard times. It’s a part of life,” she said.
She then ended up falling out with pal Paris Hilton after she went on to date one of Mary-Kate’s ex-boyfriends, Stavros Niarchos III.
“[Paris and I] always only had nice things to say about each other. Now I guess you can tell we’re not talking,” she told W magazine.
Mary-Kate was then linked to Heath Ledger and was reportedly dating him when he died of a drug overdose in 2008, aged 27.
His housekeeper called Mary-Kate for help when she found him and MK sent a private security guard to the apartment, who called 911 when he got there, but tragically the star could not be revived.
Mary-Kate then got hitched to French banker Olivier Sarkozy, who was 17 years older than her, and the brother of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
But this didn’t end well as she filed for divorce in April last year, requesting an emergency divorce order the next day, claiming he was forcing her out of their home just as the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Olivier was said to be concerned about the coronavirus outbreak and wanted to keep his family safe, so moved his ex-wife and two kids into his residence once MK had left.
In January 2021, the divorce was finalised over a Zoom call with both parties and their lawyers.
Ashley Olsen
Like her sister, Ashley also found love with older men and dated financier Richard Sachs, who was a whopping 28 years her senior.
But this didn’t last, as for the past four years she has been linked to Still House Group artist Louis Eisner.
In a rarely-seen act of PDA, he shared a photo of Ashley this summer walking through the woods weirdly holding a machete in one hand and a beer in the other which, safe to say, baffled fans.
Ashley also dated cyclist Lance Armstrong back in 2007, 15 years her senior, but he was reportedly encouraged to dump her to preserve his image.
Over the years, she was also once seen kissing actor Jared Leto and linked to other older men including David Schulte, president of The Row, then 44, film director Bennett Miller, then 49, and artist George Condo, then 59.
