Naga Munchetty divides BBC fans with 'awkward' chat with Sean Lock's grieving pals

BBC Breakfast fans were curling their toes in angst as Naga Munchetty engaged with Sean Lock’s grieving friends on Thursday’s episode.

The 46-year-old host was branded the “worst person” to conduct the emotional discussion.

Sean’s close pals Bill Bailey and Dave Spikey appeared on the programme to pay respects and tributes to their “hero”.

Things turned awkward, when Naga asked Dave: “How did you become friends?”

Dave appeared to be very emotional, leaving the presenter to follow up with: “And I should say, I’m very sorry”.

BBC Breakfast fans felt “awkward” watching Naga interview Sean Lock’s grieving friends

Responding, Dave said: “You know it’s hard.

“I looked at the computer the other day and his picture came up, that lovely smile and I thought ‘oh what’s Sean up to?’ and you read it… and it’s disbelief.

“I think ‘no’ because a massive presence has gone, the whole world of comedy is darker. I couldn’t believe it.”

He explained: “We became friends when I was on stage behind Sean because I was starting out in comedy quite late and I had worked with him at the Northern circuit in Manchester – The Buzz Club.

“It was difficult to break into London and I got chatting to Sean, we got on – I mean who didn’t, he was kind and a really generous man.

“I was telling him how difficult it was to get onto the circuit in London and him with a few others started to open up a few doors for me.

Fans of the programme slammed Naga’s questioning

“Within two or three years I was playing The Comedy Store with him and you’d walk in and you’d think ‘who’s on tonight?'”

Dave added: “There’s me, Bill Bailey and Sean Lock and you’d think ‘can I go on first?’

“‘I don’t want to follow these two.”

Viewers of the programme criticised the segment and Naga’s interviewing skills on Twitter.

One tweet read: “Doesn’t #Naga ask some stupid questions? #BBCBreakfast.”

A second person added: “Naga is the worst person to interview grieving guests #BBCBreakfast.”

Dave became emotional during the interview, adding that Sean was a “kind and generous man”

While a third penned: “Feel awkward just watching Naga interviewing here #BBCBreakfast.”

However, a fourth said: “Lovely tribute, much loved and will be sadly missed.”

Comedian’s Dave and Bill appeared on the show to pay tribute to Sean Lock after it was announced he had passed away after losing his battle with cancer at the age of 58.

Yesterday, a statement from his agent was released confirming his sad death.

The Off The Kerb Productions said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.

“He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.

“Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.

“I loved him. I’m watching clips of him right now – laughing & crying. I’ll miss him so much.”
