BBC Breakfast fans were left cringing on Friday morning, as hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt descended into an “awkward” silence.
It came as Charlie appeared to challenge Naga on her knowledge of one sporting story as the pair pored over the day’s newspapers on the red sofa – leading to a pretty tense clash.
Charlie was telling the story of “double-jointed” Adam Peaty when Naga said: “I raise you, to a sumo wrestler.
“This is the fabulous story of a sumo wrestler who had injured both knees, so he is a Mongolian sumo wrestler, Terunofuji,” Naga explained.
She documented how the wrestler had ended up in a wheelchair after the injury.

“He got married – he is 29 years old – and his wife put him on a healthy diet of fish dishes, and he stopped drinking alcohol, so he gave up all the beer.
“And then, what happened is he had been relegated right down the sumo wrestling divisions, so he’d lost his monthly salary and was on the verge of quitting the sport.”
Naga continued: “And then, because he did so well, he had all these victories, he shocked all his spectators at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament in July, he secured victory 13 wins out of 15 bouts.

“And so he has been promoted to yokozuna.”
Charlie was more concerned with another element of the story, as he interrupted Naga to ask: “How big is he?”
Naga was silent for a moment as she scrutinised the article for the information, eventually saying: “I can’t see. But he’s big. He’s gonna be big.”

Charlie wasn’t impressed, commenting: “And so your information on that is that he is big?”
Naga couldn’t hold back an awkward grin as she looked directly into the camera, and an incredibly awkward silence reigned over the studio.
Eventually, Charlie said: “Erm… so, time now is 20 minutes past six,” and turned the conversation to the programme’s Olympic scheduling.
But it wasn’t enough to distract fans from the tense silence, as one speculated on Twitter: “Well that wasn’t an awkward silence at all… #BBCBreakfast.”
“Awkward silence!” another cringed.
A third fan chipped in: “Naga and Charlie on the BBC are hilarious!”
