Only Fools and Horses Jevon star Steven Woodcock has spoken exclusively to Daily Star about his time in the famous sitcom to celebrate and commemorate the 40th anniversary of the famous British show.
Steven, 57, opened up about the fan attention he received while on the show, explaining that people still shout ‘Jevon’ at him today – even little kids – and how he still loves it.
Reminiscing about a time when the cast was shooting the Only Fools and Horses special episode, The Jolly Boys Outing, Steven opened up about being referred to as ‘the black one’.
Speaking to Daily Star, he said: “There was once when we were in Margate shooting The Jolly Boys Outing and two old ladies who apparently used to watch the show came up, and they said, ‘Oh there’s Rodney, and Trigger’s there, and oh look, there’s the black one’
“And her mate said to her, ‘that’s Jevon’ and that was quite funny because it’s just the way they sort of related to it and how they saw my character,” he explained.
Steven continued, “It’s a black character you know, and I am black, so it’s fine you know, it’s great, because that’s how she identified with me.”
During the interview, Steven also opened up about the revelation that classic episodes of the BBC sit-com were labelled with a warning on streaming services such as Britbox.
Five episodes of the BBC sit-com have been hit with an alert due to “offensive racial content” with episodes including The Russians Are Coming, Yellow Peril, Happy Returns and Hole In On.
Bosses at Britbox believe that some viewers may find the episodes offensive due to “some offensive racial language of the time” but this has been questioned by members of the cast and longtime fans of the show since it emerged.
Chatting to Daily Star, Steven urged that the show was “of its time”.
He said: “It was of its time, I was never offended by it – if I was, I would have said, I’d have either went to the producer or John Sullivan himself and say ‘I’m not happy with this, I think people are going to look at this in a different way'”.
Steven added: “Production companies don’t always see what the public can see so I don’t really have a problem with it, I just think it was the time.
“It’s just like some of the sexist remarks that were made that just wouldn’t come out of a man’s mouth today.”
