Our Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen's son heartbroken as sheep dies from overeating

While Amanda and Clive Owen may be the parents of the family who run Ravenseat, their 14-year-old child Miles also helps out, with his own flock to care for.

Miles is a fell runner with a number of trophies won for his efforts, fell running being a type of running that includes getting across steep land and rivers.

But besides his love for running, he’s also a passionate farmer who works at Ravenseat, taking on the job of raising the hens until they’re used to the weather.

Amanda’s 2019 book Adventures Of The Yorkshire reveals young Miles was devastated when one of his sheep died suddenly after overindulging in the farm’s feed store.

Miles has his own flock of Texdales he cares for as he grows into a farmer and in the book Amanda discusses how heartbroken he was when one passed.

She said: “He lamps his little flock himself. Everything is times carefully to make sure that his sheep’s due dates coincide with the Easter school holidays.

“He gets to see it all, and he was heartbroken when one day he went outside to feed his sheep and found one had escaped and got into the feedstore, overindulged, become bloated and died.

“It’s entirely his flock and he makes decisions about who he keeps and who he sells, just a hint of guidance from Clive”

Elsewhere in the book, Amanda discussed her son’s caring attitude to each of their farm animals, taking his time to nurture the hens.

She said: “Every year we replenish our ageing flock of hens with end-of-lay hens destined for processing.

“Miles takes them under his wing caring for them in the barn until they become acclimatised to the weather at Ravenseat and can become free-range.”

Fans were surprised in the 2020 Christmas special when Miles picked out the chicken the family would eat for Christmas dinner.

His ease is revealed to be a growing moment for the teen, moving on from his earlier heartbreak with his flock.

Miles has come a long way from heartbreak to being able to select a chicken for dinner and while Amanda describes him as quiet, sensitive and knowledgeable, she also notes that he lives for the day when he can farm full-time.
