Controversial former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan shared an image of Sean Lock on Twitter after it was announced that the comedian had died of cancer, aged just 58.
Piers’s post read: “‘If I could have my ashes spread anywhere I wanted, I’d have them spread in Piers Morgan’s eyes.’ RIP Sean Lock.”
The post was a self referential nod to a joke that Sean himself had once made on The Last Leg. Host Adam Hills asked Sean: “Have you got any showbiz beefs, Sean? Anyone that you wanna pick a fight with?”
After a moment to think, Sean replied: “Oh, Piers Morgan.”
As the audience laughed, fellow guest Lorraine Kelly, sitting next to Sean, says: “Tick!”
Sean continued: “It’s in my will that when I die my ashes will be thrown in his eyes.”
Piers’s throwback to the edgy gag went over the heads of some of his followers.
One fumed: “And in true Piers Morgan fashion you’ve managed to make this one about you. RIP Sean Lock – a pillar of British comedy.”
But another responded: “Usually when people pass away mate..people tell funny stories about the person. He’s not making it about himself in the slightest. He’s literally telling the guys comic side about a joke he told about him. It’s a clearly in memory off him.”
“Making it about you again,” another grumbled.
But yet another follower hit back, saying:
“I’m not exactly a fan of Piers. But I’m not sure he has made this about him by quoting Sean speaking about him. It’s obviously something he remembers about him, and is derogatory to him, if anything, it’s humorous and makes us think of just how hilarious Sean could be.
Sean himself would probably have enjoyed the argy bargy and seen the funny side of the minor furore. Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry.
One of the most poignant came from Countdown’s Dictionary Corner legend Susie Dent, who wrote:
“I wish I had the words to describe the exceptional man that was Sean Lock. But today I don’t, and I think he might have liked it that way.”
