Piers Morgan's possible GMB replacements as Alex Beresford tipped to take over

Piers Morgan has quit Good Morning Britain after causing outrage over his controversial comments about Meghan Markle.

The 55-year-old television presenter has “decided to leave” the ITV programme after he received a tirade of backlash over his continuous criticism of the Duchess of Sussex.

ITV said in a statement: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

The announcement comes after Ofcom confirmed it is launching an investigation into GMB and ITV after receiving more than 41,000 complaints about Monday’s show.

So who might viewers see replacing Morgan on the ITV programme during the week?

Alex Beresford

Numerous fans have urged ITV to make weather reporter Alex Beresford Piers’ replacement on the ITV programme.

Beresford, 40, has presented the weather on GMB since it began in 2014 and made his debut as a guest presenter on the ITV show in 2020.

During Tuesday’s GMB, Alex branded Piers’ behaviour “diabolical” and said the presenter had continued to “trash” Meghan Markle after she cut him off.

Beresford certainly has the public backing him to be Piers’ replacement as one fan tweeted: “Petition for Alex Beresford to replace Piers Morgan on GMB?”

While another wrote: “I think Alex Beresford should replace piers now tbh. It makes sense”.

“Alex Beresford should replace Piers Morgan on GMB. He deserves it”, said another.

Trisha Goddard

Viewers have also called for television star Trisha Goddard to be Morgan’s replacement on the ITV show.

The television presenter, 63, is best known for her iconic talk show Trisha, which ran from 1998 until 2004 on ITV before it moved over to Channel 5 until 2010.

Last year, The Sun reported that Trisha is currently shooting a pilot for the reboot of her show.

An insider told the publication: “It’s being referred to as Talk to Trisha at the moment.”

Many fans want Trisha to replace Piers as one tweeted: “Trisha Goddard to replace Piers Morgan.”

Another penned: “I hope they replace him with Trisha”.

“Can we start a petition to have Trisha replace Piers Morgan?”, added a third.

Ben Shephard

Another possible replacement is ITV host Ben Shephard.

Ben, 46, already hosts GMB on Thursdays and Fridays alongside Kate Garraway and the Tipping Point presenter also fills in for Piers on special occasions.

However, ITV reportedly ear-marked Shephard as a potential replacement for Phillip Schofield if he ever made his departure from This Morning.

ITV’s daytime boss Emma Gormley sees Ben as the top candidate to replace Phil, according to The Sun.

But a spokesperson for ITV told Mirror Online there’s no truth to the claim, describing it as “untrue”.

Does this mean he could replace Piers on GMB?

Adil Ray

Actor Adil Ray, 46, is another potential replacement as the TV star has been guest hosting GMB since August 2018.

Adil also hosts ITV’s new game show Lingo, which sees contestant pairs attempt to work out what appears in Lingo grids and Puzzlewords.

The Citizen Khan star has never worked with Piers on-screen and in November 2019, he took a swipe at Morgan as he joked: “The best thing about standing in for Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain is that you don’t have to meet Piers Morgan.”

Piers wasted no time in firing back at Adil as he savagely tweeted: “Best thing about Adil filling in for me is he always tanks the ratings”.

Sean Fletcher

Sean Fletcher, 46, is best known for being a presenter on Good Morning Britain and Countryfile.

He regularly stands in for Charlotte Hawkins as the relief newsreader and so is certainly a candidate to replace Piers Morgan after his departure from GMB.

Media personality Sean began his career behind the scenes in radio, but then moved in front of the camera hosting sports bulletins on BBC News in 2005.

Sean initially joined Good Morning Britain as a sports newsreader for the first episode in April 2014.

Eamonn Holmes

Eamonn Holmes, 61, could be about to take Piers Morgan’s GMB spot as he’s hosted ITV daytime shows for decades.

Holmes started on GMTV’s first-ever show in 1993 and has presenter GMB in the past.

After leaving Sky News, Eamonn made his return to ITV on GMB in August 2017.

He admitted it was great to be back despite the “ridiculously” early wake-up call.

Eamonn and his wife Ruth Langsford were recently replaced on This Morning as Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary now present the show on a Friday.

Does this mean Eamonn is available to replace Piers?

GMB airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
