Quantum Leap actor Dean Stockwell dies aged 85 as fans pay emotional tribute

Legendary actor Dean Stockwell has died at the age of 85, reports have said.

The Hollywood star was famed for his role as Admiral Al Calavicci on the sci-fi show Quantum Leap between 1989 and 1993.

He was also known for his role as Brother Cavil in the revived series of Battlestar Galactica between 2004 and 2009.

The actor passed away from natural causes on Sunday morning (November 7), according to TMZ.

Famous figures in the industry have paid their respects to Stockwell, as well as fans of the actor.

Taking to Twitter, Filmmaker Bilge Ebiri wrote: “RIP Dean Stockwell, a great actor who never met a scene he couldn’t steal.”

One fan wrote: “Growing up I used to catch afternoon re-runs of Quantum Leap after school. I loved everything about that show, the storylines and Al – Sam’s lone tether to the life he can’t get back to. Dean Stockwell is engrained into my earliest tv/movie affinity. RIP”

A second said: “Rest in peace, Dean Stockwell. THE DUNWICH HORROR, PARIS, TEXAS, THE LAST MOVIE, DUNE, MARRIED TO THE MOB, TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA… Just a litany of great films.”

A third commented: “I think Dean Stockwell was probably the first actor I ever loved, he was just so goddamned suave on Quantum Leap.

“Then you get older and see him pop up all over and realize he was actually one of the greatest character actors of all time. What a legacy! RIP.”

Starting off as a child actor for MGM Studios in the 1940s, his impressive acting career in Hollywood spanned almost 70 years.

He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor after his role in the crime comedy film, Married to the Mob (1988).

Stockwell also played supporting roles in films such as Paris, Texas (1984), Dune (1984) and Bkue Velvet (1986).

He won more critical acclaim when he bagged a Best Actor award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival – for his role as Edmund Tyrone in the film adaptation in Long Day’s Journey into Night 1962.

A stage actor too, Stockwell graced the Broadway theatre stage in 1957 where he played a lead role in the crime drama, Compulsion.

Dean appeared at numerous science fiction conventions over the years following his roles on Quantum leap and Battlestar Galactica.

The actor was also a musician who wrote several compositions during his time at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dean is survived by his wife Joy and their two children.
