Simon Cowell says his £15m mansion 'nearly floated away' during London floods

X Factor mogul Simon Cowell has told of how he feared for his new London home after West London was hit with torrential floods.

The business tycoon half-joked that he thought his new multimillion mansion would ‘float away’ as streets turned into rivers in West London earlier this week.

The shocking flash floods saw a month’s rain fall in just 60 minutes causing the affluent area causing havoc to the area.

When asked if his home had avoided the worst of it, Cowell replied: “Not really, my house nearly floated away.”

Meanwhile, fellow West London resident Queen’s Brian May took to social media to tell of his horror after a sewage leak sparked havoc at his home.

In a clip posted online, the iconic guitarist said: ” “The whole bottom floor had been inundated with a sewage overflow – which has covered our carpets, rugs and all kinds of precious (to us) things in a stinking sludge.

“It’s disgusting, and actually quite heartbreaking.”

While unconfirmed it is thought that the mega-mansions of West London could be partly to blame for the extreme flooding.

Many of the homes now sport so-called super basements after residents have dug down to extended their homes.

Talking about how the renovations could have created the perfect storm to allow flooding, expert Mary Dhonau OBE said: “There has got to be somewhere for the water to go. When there is rain it falls onto the ground and percolates in areas of the ground.

“Super-basements are being built where the water would naturally percolate.”

She added to Mail Online: “There are other factors like climate change, but the more we take away permeable surfaces the more places will flood.

“North Kensington is a prime example of land that would have soaked up water, which is now being used for super basements.

“It is a jigsaw of things that can cause flooding. You can do things to make flooding more likely and one of those things is using more land for super-basements.”
