It’s been years since One Direction climbed the charts, but Simon Cowell believes he could convince the boy band to put aside their differences and reunite.
Formed on The X Factor, 1D became teen heartthrobs back in 2010, only for Zayn Malik to quit the group five years later.
The remaining members – Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson – stuck around for one more studio album, before splitting indefinitely.
Now, the man who brought them together in the first place believes he can inspire them to reunite once more.
Speaking to The Mirror, Simon, 61, said: “I think it will happen. If they got together, whether it’s making records again or touring, it would be the most amazing thing.”
Simon insisted a hefty pep talk would be enough to persuade them to make more music, even if they only stick together for a few months.
He added: “If I could get into a room with them and just say, ‘You know what, whether it’s six months or something, I think you’d have such a great time’ – maybe I could persuade them.”
After going their separate ways, each member of One Direction has launched a successful solo career in a departure from their boyband roots.
Harry Styles’ album Fine Line, released in 2019, debuted at number three, and made hits of songs like Watermelon Sugar and Lights Up.
Zayn has also released his own music, recording two solo albums and collaborating with the likes of Sia, Taylor Swift and Sabrina Claudio.
Niall’s debut album, Flicker, topped the charts in 2017, while Louis released his Walls album last year.
LP1 was Liam’s first solo album, released in 2019 through Capitol Records, and receiving mostly positive reviews.
Liam previously addressed a potential reunion for the band, insisting they would need “at least two years” to continue with their solo work.
During the promotional tour for LP1, he said: “I think at some point we will get back together. I think we will for sure.
“I don’t know when that is yet, but all I know is that there are at least two years because everyone’s released new music and you have to go and promo.”
He added: “There are at least two years.”
However, two years have since passed and the boys look no closer to joining forces.
Perhaps Simon can bring them back together?
