He made his name on the Great British Bake Off, but now John Whaite is trading cakes for dancing as the latest contestant announced for Strictly and he will be part of the first all-male couple on the show.
John was the winner of the third series of the Great British Bake Off in 2012.
He still works as a chef but often appears on shows like Steph’s Packed Lunch.
John said: “I’m so grateful, excited, and nervous to be joining the Strictly 2021 family.”
The 33-year-old star is no stranger to a sparkly outfit, he says: “I’ve been wearing sequins and jazzy attire since I was three years old and can’t wait to hurl myself, full throttle, around the most glamorous dance floor on earth.
John confirmed he was going to be part of a first for the show, too: What’s more exciting for me, is that I’m going to be one half of the first all-male partnership, which is a great step forward in representation and inclusion.”
“Whoever it is I’m paired with, I hope they are up for a challenge as I want our routines to include lots of spectacular lifts!”
Olympian Nicola Adams formed part of the first same-sex couple to appear on Strictly last year.
She was paired up with Katya Jones.
Fans were thrilled with the news.
One tweeted happily: “Representation matters.”
Another added: “An all male partnership is what we all deserve”
“Well done John. I’ve been looking forward to seeing a Bake Off star on the dance floor! Excited to see the first all male dance pairing” enthused one very excited fan.
There are rumours that John will be paired with Italian professional Graziano Di Prima, who previously teamed up with Johannes Radebe for an all-male professional routine in 2019.
John has a hugely devoted fanbase who will be thrilled to see him on the dance floor.
His part in the show was revealed by Matt Lucas this morning.
It comes after McFly’s Tom Fletcher, presenter AJ Odudu and Robert Webb were announced last night.
As well as a weekly cooking slot on Steph’s Packed Lunch, John has published five cookery books and runs his own cookery school, John Whaite’s Kitchen.
He’s already taken the trophy for Great British Bake Off, so will he be the one to lift the iconic glitterball trophy too?
This will be the 19th series of the smash hit show.
