Strictly's Ugo Monye gives health update after painful injury forced him to miss show

Strictly Come Dancing star Ugo Monye has shared a health update after undergoing a hospital procedure saying he is “back fit” and ready to get back on the dancefloor.

The rugby star reassured viewers that he is “looking forward” to his next performance after pulling out of last week’s show after his ‘history of back problems’ started to cause issues.

Appearing on Tuesday’s episode of Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, Ugo announced: “I’m doing okay – I had a couple of injections into my spine on Friday, a couple of days rest and Oti’s looked after me like a trooper this week.

“I’ve been able to get back onto the d-floor and looking forward to Saturday night.”

He described his back injury as “historic” and that dancing had flared it up.

He added: “I have never had to do this stuff that I have had to do over the last four weeks, it’s just triggered it.”

Ugo also thanked the show’s production staff for “that weekend of grace to get myself back fit”.

The retired athlete also revealed that he went to hospital on Friday for “a little procedure”.

He went on to emphasise that he is now focusing on “trying to get a balance between doing enough and not allowing my back to flare up, which is so frustrating because the lines are so blurred.”

Ugo continued: “I want to keep pushing, pushing, pushing, but I also don’t want to push too far whereby I can’t dance on Saturday.”

This comes after pro dancer Giovanni Pernice has reportedly “dumped” Love Island’s Maura Higgins because he wasn’t ready “to settle down”, according to a source close to the pair.

The dancer, 31, has been spending a lot of time rehearsing for the BBC show with his EastEnders actress dance partner Rose Ayling-Ellis, 26.

Fans first noticed something was amiss when both Giovanni and stunning Maura deleted snaps of each other from their social media.

According to The Sun, Maura, 30, was left blindsided by the sudden breakup and is said to be “utterly heartbroken”.

Maura has now reportedly told friends that she “has to move on” from the Strictly professional dancer.

A source claims: “Maura didn’t see this coming and is finding it very difficult to come to terms with. She genuinely thought Gio was the one.”
