The Chase fans are used to seeing the show’s legendary Chasers in the hot seat, but a new ITV series will show a different side to the brainiacs.
Anne Hegerty, 62, Mark Labbett, 55, and Shaun Wallace, 60, have teamed up for The Chaser’s Road Trip: Trains, Brains and Automobiles, which launches on Thursday.
The show will see the Chasers taking on brainy creatures of the animal kingdom, child geniuses and the cleverest tech on the market.
Travelling through America, the show offers viewers the chance to get to know their favourite Chasers a little better, away from the bright lights of the ITV studios.
Known for their general knowledge, the premise of the show is for the Chasers to question: “Are we really as smart as we think we are?”
The series also shows a more human side to the Chasers, with “The Beast” Mark stripping to his trunks for a swim in the sea.
In one scene, Shaun could be seen flexing on the beach, stretching out on a yoga mat in his swimming togs, his tattoos on display.
Discussing one of the challenges, Shaun said: “It was strange swimming around blindfolded, but it was really to see whether I can use my sense of hearing and my sense of direction even though I couldn’t tell where I was.”
Later, Anne wears a black swimsuit and heads for a dip, swimming with dolphins to test their intelligence.
In one episode, the Chasers get to know Kanzi, a Bonobo ape who is able to communicate with humans with clever use of pictures and symbols.
The trio also becomes friends with an orang-utan named Katie, who is known as a talented gamer in the monkey world.
Speaking about her highlight of the road trip, Anne said: “I enjoyed swimming with the dolphins, what I really enjoyed simply was the opportunity to swim in open water, which I always like doing and obviously in November, you don’t actually expect the weather to be quite so warm, I’ve never previously been on the Florida Keys, so I didn’t realise it was warm.
“I mean the water was very cold, but that was a lovely experience.”
While Mark added: “The bits where we learned about our fellow animals was fascinating, and it turns out that, there was a test that apparently chimps do really well and humans can’t do at all, and I absolutely aced it, so I guess I’m some sort of mutant retro super chimp.”
The Chaser’s Road Trip: Trains, Brains and Automobiles airs Thursday 21 January 2021 at 9pm on ITV
