The Chase's Paul Sinha leads tributes as today's contestant dies in house fire

The Chase brainbox Paul Sinha has shared his heartbreak after hearing that the contestant from Monday’s show has died.

Pete Green, who appeared on the episode which aired on September 20, filmed a year before his death sadly died aged 72.

It’s believed that Pete, also known as Pete Travis, had died in June following a housefire, with his heartbroken family saying their memories will “carry us through the tough times ahead”.

During his episode, Pete went face-to-face against Paul Sinha in the cash building round before he and his fellow contestant were caught in the final chase, with just one second to spare.

Ahead of his cash builder round, Pete introduced himself, stating that he was a medieval trader from Norfolk, who also worked several other jobs, including a scare-fest worker over the Halloween period.

Just hours after Pete’s episode had aired and after hearing the news, Paul tweeted: “Saddened to hear that Pete from today’s Chase has since passed away in horrible circumstances.

“A true gentleman, a warm, engaging and thoroughly entertaining opponent.”

One of Paul’s followers responded: “Pete was the Town Crier and lived about 500m from my house.

“It was a great shock to the local community. He had a great send-off with a horse-drawn procession through the town centre, with his family and Steam Punk friends following.”

“That is really lovely to hear, Audrey,” said Paul.

Shortly after Paul’s tweet, his followers flocked to the comment section to share their condolences.

Another pal of Pete’s wrote: “He was a character as we could all tell today you saw that too xxx I was lucky enough to know him and he loved his time on the chase and was so excited for his day out.

“I was lucky to be the florist to help give him the proper steampunk send-off he deserved xx [sic].”

“Yes everyone in Wymondham knew him, a great character and loved his quiz nights at the local pubs,” tweeted another friend of Pete’s.

It was reported by the Eastern Daily Press that Pete’s house on Damgate Street caught fire, between 9pm on June 26 and 3am on June 27.

Paying tribute, Pete’s heartbroken family said at the time: “You touched so many lives and leave us all with the fondest memories, which will carry us through the tough times ahead.

“A much-loved character across Wymondham, re-enactment and steampunk communities to name but a few.”

They added: “Father of four, grandfather to eight, and companion to Kiki the Jack Russell. You will be sorely missed..”

During Pete’s episode of The Chase, he accepted an offer of minus £5,000 in the head-to-head round, meaning the prize fund would be lowered to £40,000 so he and his fellow contestant would both walk away £20,000 richer, should they have beaten the chaser.
