Prince Charles and Princess Diana first met back in 1977 when Diana was just 16-years-old.
Charles was 29-years-old at the time and had been dating Diana’s older sister, Sarah – but he soon caught Diana’s attention.
Their first meeting was at Diana’s family estate, Althorp House in Northamptonshire, while Charles was visiting for a pheasant shoot.
PrinceCharles once reminisced on their first encounter, describing her as “ a very jolly and amusing and attractive 16-year-old”.
Saying she was “great fun, and bouncy and full of life”.
The aristocratic pair’s relationship soon blossomed and when Diana was just 19, Charles proposed to her at Windsor Castle.
It is said the couple only met 13 times before Charles proposed.
Charles, when asked if he was in love after his engagement, once famously retorted to a reporter, “whatever ‘in love’ means.”
On 29 July 1981, just a year after they started officially dating, the couple got married at Westminster Abbey.
The ceremony was described as a “fairytale wedding” and was televised to over 750 million people
A year later in 1982 the Prince and Princess welcomed their first son into the world, Prince William.
Followed by the birth of Prince Harry in 1983.
But a year after the birth of Harry, events began to unfold as it is reported that Charles began his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
After years of official engagements together and photographs showing the couple looking unhappy, the pair announced they were separating in 1992.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister, John Major, who read from a Buckingham Palace statement “This decision has been reached amicably and they will both continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children.”
The divorce was finalised in 1996 and they both moved on, Diana went on to date Dodi Fayed and Charles picked things back up with Camilla.
Sadly in 1997, a year after they divorced Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris, along with her partner at the time Dodi Fayed and driver, Henri Paul.
Prince Charles continued a relationship with Camilla and they eventually got married in 2005.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married for 15 years with her life ending just a year after the divorce was finalised.
