The One Show's Alex Jones breaks down in tears live on air as her maternity leave begins

Alex Jones failed to hold back the tears on Friday’s episode of The One Show as she bided farewell to her colleagues and viewers.

Earlier in the programme, the presenting legend informed fans that this would be her last time on the evening show before she takes her maternity leave.

Alex, 44, is currently expecting her third child but this didn’t stop the tears from falling when it was time to say goodbye to her colleagues and viewers at home.

BBC producers played a heart warming video to the expectant mum of her friends, family and fans wishing her goodbye which led Alex to break down as she expressed that it was “really hard to go away”.

The touching video included Alex’s husband Charlie Thomson, her parents, Jason Donavan and One Show hosts.

Lost for words, Alex said: “Oh you know me I cry over the slightest thing. But it’s been… honestly being here is just superb, I loved doing it every night and it’s really hard to go away. I know it the third one but it’s really hard to go away.

“And I just want to say, if I’ve missed anybody a big thank you to everybody who’s knitted lovely little gifts for the baby.

“There’s about 24 cardigans, she ‘s gonna be in cardigan heaven!” She joked.

Alex continued: “Honestly, I loved every minute, it’s very hard to leave.”

Pointing to co-host Gethin Jones, Alex said: “Thank you Geth for this week as well, it’s so nice to end the show with you, somebody that I know so well.

“And hopefully I’ll be back in the Autumn,” she said.

Presenter Gethin then went on to talk about the process of getting the video tribute together and said that they needed to include former Neighbours star Jason Donavan in the clip.

Laughing along, Alex continued to thank the crew and The One Show staff as she wiped the tears away from her eyes.

Although Alex is going away on maternity leave, the BBC also announced that The One Show will be going on a short summer break too.

The One Show’s official Twitter account penned: “#TheOneShow is going on a short summer break! @MissAlexjones is off to have her baby so @ronanofficial and @jjenas8 will be back in about three weeks – see you then!”

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm
