Westlife dropped by their record label after Covid stopped their 2020 tour

Westlife have been dropped by their record label, according to reports.

The chart-topping Irish band have been culled by EMI despite their latest recording hitting number one in the UK.

Music insiders have claims that despite it topping the charts, the album didn’t shift as many copies as bosses had hoped.

Part of the blame is being placed at the door of the pandemic, with Spectrum being released in November 2019.

Westlife had planned to go on a major tour in 2020 which would have driven up streams and sales but due to lockdowns around the world the shows were axed.

A music insider said: “Westlife are still a big name but their album came out months before the first lockdown, which has made things really difficult.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t quite sell as well as the team had hoped and because there have been a lot of changes at the label, they have decided to let Westlife go.

“They had a whole tour planned for 2020 which would have boosted sales of their music but the pandemic has really hampered things for everyone.”

Despite the disappointing turn of events, Westlife haven’t taken the news too hard.

A spokesman for the band told The Sun: “They’ve agreed a mutual parting of ways with EMI and details of a new and groundbreaking partnership are imminent.

“The next 18 months are shaping up to be the band’s busiest, including a new album, sold-out stadium shows — featuring a first show at Wembley Stadium — plus their biggest-ever global tour, which will include their first-ever American shows.”

They added that Westlife are also debating a TV documentary to air at the end of 2021.

Previously chatting to Daily Star, the lads admitted despite toning down their wild ways they still like to hit the bottle hard after some shows.

Kian Egan said: “I think we have calmed down a bit.

“There have been moments where certain members of the band have been kicked out of hotels for throwing stuff out of windows and stuff like that.

“We do have moments when we let go and I think we always tend to have a blow out when we are on tour after a stressful few weeks and a night out will be planned and it will end up a bit of a state.”

That being said after year’s of partying the lads now only stick to certain drinks.

“I can’t do shots. I will be dying for days,” Shane Filan explained.

“I can drink flat out beer but I won’t do shots or vodka.”

Meanwhile, Mark Feehily added: “I drank vodka Diet Coke for twenty years and my body is just going ‘no more vodka'”.
