Zara Holland 'to appear in Barbados court over breaching Covid-19 law charges'

Love Island 2016 star Zara Holland will appear at a Barbados court on Wednesday after being charged with breaching Covid-19 laws, it is alleged.

Former Miss Great Britain, Zara, 25, and boyfriend Elliott Love, 30, were allegedly arrested at the island’s airport on Wednesday.

They were attempting to flee the island to avoid being admitted to a quarantine facility after Elliot tested positive for coronavirus, it is alleged.

If found guilty by the court the pair could face an £18,000 fine or a prison sentence.

The pair’s arrest comes after the island has seen a surge of 200 new cases of the virus in the past two days, it is claimed.

It is alleged 33 of the cases on the island are linked to the airport, The Sun reports.

The pair’s court date is a week after a fellow tourist was jailed for six months for a similar breach.

More than 800 people have signed a petition, including many Barbados residents, which demand the pair are jailed.

The petition reads: “They undermined the huge amount of work that had been done to suppress community transmission and they didn’t just risk the livelihoods of Bajans, they risked their lives.

“If one single person dies as a result of their selfish and cowardly actions, then they should be charged with murder. Either way, we strongly believe they should receive a custodial sentence, either in Barbados or the UK, for wantonly endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.”

Zara, who is a regular visitor to the Caribbean island, was allegedly, confined to her hotel room yesterday.

She spoke out to apologise to Barbados residents last week and told how there had been a “mix up” during her recent visit.

She told island newspaper Barbados Today: “I would never do anything to jeopardise an entire nation that I have nothing but love and respect for.”

She said: “I firstly wish to apologise to the entire country of Barbados for what has been a massive mix up and misunderstanding during my most recent stay.”

Zara added: “I am currently working closely with the local authorities to rectify any issues on my part and will issue an update and full statement which I think is the only right thing to do to the Government and citizens of Barbados.”

Zara and Elliott had planned to celebrate New Year in the exotic location.

The couple had been staying at the £300-a-night beachfront Sugar Bay resort.

It is alleged Zara and Elliot were swabbed when they arrived in Barbados on Sunday afternoon.

They were told to isolate in their hotel room until they got their results, it is alleged.

Elliott was then given a positive test, which led to the pair being given red identity bracelets and being taken to a coronavirus quarantine centre, it’s claimed.

It is alleged before health officials could come to collect them, Zara and Elliot cut off their wristbands, booked a flight and went to the airport in a taxi.

The wristbands were said to have been found by a member of staff at the plush hotel, who then reported the couple to police.
