Amber Heard allegedly punched Johnny Depp in the face during a blazing argument after she’d already spat and thrown a can of Red Bull at him, a jury has been told.
A security guard claims the actress smacked her then-husband in the mouth in their Los Angeles penthouse in March 2015 as he tried to separate them.
Travis McGivern described the altercation as the couple’s bitter defamation case against each other continued in Fairfax, Virginia, on Monday.
He said during the fight, Heard also spat on Depp.
Mr McGivern was asked to recall the incident.
He said he could not remember what started the argument and said the couple gave “as good as they got”.
Of Heard, he told the jury of seven, she shouted at Depp: “You’re f** washed up. You’re a * f*c***”.
He added: “Mr Depp was giving as good as he got at that point.”
The bodyguard clarified he was referring to verbal, not physical, abuse.
Mr McGivern told how when Heard left the penthouse Depp “rearranged” some of her wardrobe, ripping down every rack of clothes and shoes.
He said the actress later returned and was very “agitated” to find her items strewn across the apartment, seeing the pair clash.
He said as it became heated, he stepped in between them.
At that point, out of the corner of my eye, I see a fist and an arm come across my right shoulder, and I heard, and I saw a closed fist contact Mr Depp in the left side of his face,” said McGivern.
The punch, he said, left the Black Mass star with a “shiner,” who insisted the actor leave immediately.”
“I let him get hit by a Red Bull can. I let him get punched,” he said.
My job is to ensure the safety and well being of my clients, and I felt like I hadn’t done that.”
McGivern told jurors the pair fought often.
He said: “There was a lot of verbal vitriol from both of them.”
Heard has admitted she hit Depp during the argument but claimed it was only after he shoved her sister, Whitney Heard.
Mr McGivern said the actor, 58, did not push Heard’s sibling.
Testimony in the case has also included audio evidence of the actress admitting she domestically abused Depp.
It included her taunting the actor about how she once hit him and that no one would believe he was a victim of physical abuse by women.
A recent petition to have Heard removed from the Aquaman 2 movie has reached more than three million signatures.
Depp is suing his former wife for defamation over a Washington Post op-ed she wrote about domestic violence, although she did not name her ex-husband.
He is demanding more than £38 million, saying her domestic abuse claims have all but ended his career and ruined his reputation.
The actress, 35, has filed a countersuit against Depp, seeking almost £78 million in damages and saying his legal team falsely accused her of fabricating claims against the actor.
Heard’s counterclaim accuses Depp of orchestrating a “smear campaign” against her and describing his lawsuit as a continuation of “abuse and harassment.”
Despite being listed as witnesses for Heard, actor James Franco and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are to no longer testify in the case.
Heard is expected to open her defence on Tuesday.
The case continues.
