Bargain Hunt host Eric Knowles was left gobsmacked as one team managed to make history on the BBC series – despite a huge rule break.
The programme, which sees two teams – blue and red – compete to find the best items to take to auction with their hearts set on making a huge profit, wasn’t off to a great start as one pair managed to make history.
And not in a good way.
Despite searching high and low for items to bring to auction, Geraldine and Washington only managed to secure two items – which didn’t fulfil the brief set out by show bosses.
As the pair informed Eric that they “needed positive energy” ahead of the all-important auction, he couldn’t help but inform them: “I’ve got to say, you have made Bargain Hunt history by virtue of you only managing to buy two items.”
The pair had managed to purchase a rare Doulton jug and two vintage tennis racquets.
And their actions necessitated a penalty, as Eric told them: “The fact you were unable to buy your big spend and your big challenge means that you get penalised, I’m sorry to say.
“The ruling is that, because you didn’t do the £75 spend, you start with minus £75.”
Despite reassurance from antique expert Charles that: “The only way is up!”, the team were disappointed that they only ended up with a measly profit of just £1 after the auction.
But all hope was not lost, as Charles offered them a lifeline – the chance to purchase a bonus buy of an Art Deco clock purchased for £200.
He explained of the item: “When you want to buy something Art Deco, it’s always in demand.
“When you want to buy something which is silver and enamel, that’s very much in demand as well today.
“People love silver and enamel, put the two together, a gorgeous Art Deco timepiece. Do you like it?”
The pair decided to go ahead with the purchase – and good thing, too, as the clock sold for a whopping £380 at auction, leaving them with an overall profit of £130.
It was enough to propel the team to victory despite their earlier loss – which left fans fuming on Twitter.
One fan said: “Wasn’t worth the hype […] red team were gifted a win by @HansonsAuctions – but they shouldn’t have been allowed a bonus but if they hadn’t bought three items!”
Another fumed: “Shouldn’t have been allowed to compete with only a £75 forfeit. Others can just do that now, but like the red team, still win! Should have been disqualified in my opinion!”
But someone else was rather impressed with the episode, as they tweeted: “Brilliant! This has got be the best episode ever! What larks!”
