BBC Breakfast was involved in a major presenting shake-up on Monday (February 14) as both its regular hosts were absent from the iconic red sofa.
Permanent presenters Dan Walker and Sally Nugent – who usually host the show on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – had been replaced by Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst.
It represented a major change for viewers, as the last time both presenters were missing from the same episode was around the Christmas period – with both taking annual leave to enjoy the festive season.
But both Nina and Jon proved popular with viewers, as one thrilled fan couldn’t help but take to Twitter to say: “YESSSSS!!!! What a wonderful day to watch #BBCBreakfast! Two decent presenters – no need for Sky News this morning!”
Another suggested: “Much better line up this morning with John and Nina. Should be Dan and Nina!”
One baffled fan wrote: “Have Dan & Sally got Valentine’s Day off or Jon+1 finally replaced them?”
Other regular stars of the show, including weather presenter Carol Kirkwood and business correspondent Ben Boulos, made up a host of familiar faces for fans in Dan and Sally’s absence.
Dan’s absence from the show soon made sense to fans, as he had been busy covering the US Super Bowl, which took place overnight.
Though Dan wasn’t presenting the show, he has been heavily involved in the run-up along with Jason Bell and Osi Umenyiora – so it made sense he would be watching the game overnight, and having a well-deserved rest in the morning.
And as a sports journalist, the same does make sense for Sally – though she has not yet been on social media to confirm the reason behind her absence.
Dan’s absence from the NFL-based show left fans bereft, with one posting: “Dan followed the highlights with you Jason & Osi all year and loved the banter! Where are you tonight?!”
Another begged: “Why isn’t Dan Walker presenting this Super Bowl? He’s miles better!”
“Waiting for the halftime show and wondering where Dan Walker is #JusticeForDanWalker!” a third fan followed up.
However, Dan – who doesn’t work on Sundays for religious reasons – was there in spirit, as he retweeted several Super Bowl based stories and praised Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s abilities as “hype man”.
Dan penned on Twitter: “The Rock is a decent hype man #SuperBowl!”
BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One.
