BBC Breakfast turned rather tense on Monday (February 14) as one presenter found himself ruthlessly mocked at the hands of his co-stars.
Business correspondent Ben Boulos was out on location at a high ropes course in the Forest of Dean to chat with its owner about being able to open so early on in the winter – and couldn’t resist attempting a slice of the course himself.
Strapped up in a harness with a camera on his chest, Ben wobbled across a rope bridge before turning to the camera.
“Here’s some jeopardy for you!” he chuckled as he made his way cautiously to the other side.
He added: “Believe it or not, this is one of the easier, the family friendly courses. Look at that one to my left – goodness knows how you even begin to attempt that course.”
He told viewers at home: “As you can see, my technique was somewhat shaky so I’m going to keep practising for a little while. You can either follow and mock if you wish, or take a nice scenic view of our high-up camera just as first light is breaking!
“I’ll leave it up to you whether you want to enjoy the sight of a wobbly Ben at 6:50 this morning – oh dear!”
Ben proceeded to make his way across some more precarious wooden slats, telling fans: “I think I’m getting better… that’s dangerous to say that, isn’t it?”
From the cosy studio, host Jon Kay joked: “We’re just going to leave you hanging Ben!”
“In every sense!” Nina chipped in, as the pair collapsed into giggles.
Reaching victory, Ben warned: “It looks easy, but I promise you it’s not! Don’t ask me to come back – that’s it.”
Nina couldn’t help but take another swipe at her co-star as she giggled: “You promised us it’s not easy, but that is the family friendly one though Ben, that presumably five and six-year-olds go on!”
Ben teased: “Look, there’s a zipwire which I’m going to try out. I’m not promising anything, but there is a zipwire – that’s all I’ll say for now!”
“We won’t hold our breath based on that performance, Ben!” Nina laughed, as Jon joked: “He’s holding his breath, look. If you zoom out he’s actually only two feet off the ground.”
As the pair collapsed into giggles, Jon excused himself: “He’s not, he’s not. He’s being very brave.
“I couldn’t do that – I absolutely hate heights. Goodness me, I couldn’t stand it!”
Nina disagreed: “Would you? Oh I’d love it! Let’s hope the families who go there do enjoy it.”
Later the studio cut back to Ben’s segment, as he warned: “I tell you, forgetting your lines isn’t the only scary thing in this world. Being 15 metres up in the treetops is just as daunting!”
It comes as both regular presenters Dan Walker and Sally Nugent were replaced by Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst in a major BBC shake-up.
BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One.
