Boy George cleared for I'm A Celeb eating trials but will have veggie alternatives

ITV bosses have confirmed Boy George can take part in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! eating trials despite his vegetarian status.

The singer, 61, has been cleared to participate in all of the show’s food-based bushtucker trials this year while maintaining his meat-free lifestyle.

George will also be provided with a vegetarian alternative in his camp meals, having thrashed out stipulations regarding his food in his show contract prior to entering the jungle.

I’m a Celeb executive producer Olly Nash told Daly Star: “We have always got alternatives if people are vegan or vegetarian and either need to eat in camp, and don’t want to eat the main meal, or for the trials.”

The confirmation is bound to disappoint some I’m a Celeb fans, who were left furious after Coronation Street star Beverley Callard avoided eating meat during a bushtucker trial on the 2020 series.

Beverley, 65, is a vegan and was made exempt from eating animal-based foods including lambs’ brains.

Memorably, she was tasked with eating fermented plums while her co-star Jordan North was made to devour a deer testicle – leading to fan complaints.

I’m a Celeb producers, however, have promised that many of the vegetarian dishes on offer in the bushtucker trials this year will be “more gross” than their meat alternatives.

Olly added: “It’s actually, weirdly, more stinky and more gross than eating the meat products.”

With show bosses keen to try out new dishes for the celebs this year, fish eyes will also be returning to the menu.

I’m a Celeb will return to television this weekend, with former health secretary Matt Hancock controversially joining the line-up at the eleventh hour.

The Tory MP, 44, was memorably sacked as health secretary after a leaked video saw him break his own lockdown rules by snogging his married aide Gina Colangelo.

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! returns at 9pm on Sunday night (November 6) on ITV.
