Comedy star Rosie Jones has shared her disappointment amid reports the Queen “doesn’t want to be seen” using a wheelchair.
The disability activist and 8 Out of 10 Cats star has cerebral palsy, which she often references in her stand-up comedy routines – and is keen to get mobility aids more in the public eye while eradicating the taboo around them.
Rosie explained she was “disappointed” by reports of the Queen’s “reluctance” to use a wheelchair – and shared a snap of her seated in a motorised chair waving Union Jack flags.
Taking to Twitter, Rosie penned: “Disappointed to read of The Queen’s reluctance to use a wheelchair.
“In 2022 ableism and internalised ableism is still everywhere. Mobility aids are not a defeat. They are life ENHANCING.
“Elizabeth love, don’t you want to look as sexy as me and Maureen?”
In the snap Rosie posted, she could be seen rocking an orange and yellow floral dress and black Doc Martens as she waves two Union Jacks, with a bigger fabric flag settled across her lap.
She completed the look with her brunette tresses pulled back into a high ponytail, adding a face mask for additional protection as she beamed at the camera.
Rosie’s fans clamoured to support her in the comments, with one writing: “I hope, like you, HM overcomes her reluctance to use a wheelchair. I was thinking, if we could get you an OBE, you could take Maureen and give her a spin around Windsor Castle!”
Someone else posted: “Without my mobility scooter life would be a lot less interesting!”
As someone else said: “Thank you for such a positive message about mobility aids.”
However, others disagreed and pointed out that it’s the Queen’s own choice whether she wants to use a wheelchair or not, with one arguing: “It’s a very personal thing and I don’t think it’s fair to be disappointed in someone else’s feelings about using a wheelchair.
“I’m so pleased for you that you love yours. It’s not so easy for everyone to accept though.”
And another said: “It’s not ableism to want to retain our physical independence as long as [possible].”
It comes amid reports that the Queen doesn’t want to be seen in a wheelchair – with many speculating that she is using one in private.
Pantomime star Christopher Biggins explained on GB News last week: “I have heard that the reason [the Queen is] not doing a lot of the events that she should be doing and cancelling them is because she is in a wheelchair.
“She doesn’t want to be seen because she’s very proud.”
The Queen has, however, used a walking stick on various public engagements recently.
