Coronation Street Toyah star opens up on moment she learned about Spider's epic return

Coronation Street star Georgia Taylor has opened up about her reaction to Martin Hancock returning to the ITV soap as Spider Nugent.

Emily Bishop’s eco-warrior nephew will return to television screens on Friday (July 1) leaving his ex Toyah Habeeb gobsmacked.

Trying to distract herself from her troubles, Toyah mounts a protest against waste incineration.

Toyah manages to successfully block in the council bin wagon on Victoria Street and leaps into the cab of the bin wagon.

A man picks his way through the protest group and clambers into the cab next to her and Toyah’s gobsmacked to see it’s Spider .

As the pair catch up and reminisce, Toyah breaks down about her husband Imran Habeeb’s death and invites Spider to stay over.

Opening up about Spider’s return to the Cobbes 25 years after his first apperance, Toyah actress Georgia told Daily Star and other press: “Wow! I was shocked but then it kind of made sense like why wouldn’t you bring him back?

“People love that character and people love us together.

“When it was announced the reaction was phenomenal.

“It’s a different energy but luckily we do have that history.

“It was a long time ago and when we’ve seen him since but it just feels natural and normal.”

Spider left Weatherfield in 2003, when he headed to London to start afresh with his then girlfriend.

Toyah and Spider later separated with him moving to Peru, while after a failed marriage Toyah returned to Weatherfield be with her family in 2016.

Martin Hancock has revealed that Spider’s return to the Cobbles was sparked by his real-life wife

Speaking about catching up with his cast mates behind-the-scenes, Martin told Daily Star and other press: “I haven’t stopped nattering to people to be honest with you.

“I went to drama school with Joe [Duttine] and in our 30-year careers we’ve never worked together.

“I just think his characters is brilliant so I’d really like to work with Joe.”

Martin went on to add that Spider’s return to the Cobbles was sparked by his wife.

He said: “I’ve always said if I was asked I would come back

“Then towards Christmas last year Georgia [Taylor] put a photo up of Toyah and Spider arm in arm when we were very young.

“My wife said: ‘You’ve always said you’d go back and you’re not getting any younger so pull your finger out and have a word with your agent’.

“So I had a word with my agent who had a word with Corrie and there was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing and here I am.”
