Corrie icon Richard Fleeshman is unrecognisable in hit Netflix series The Sandman

Former Coronation Street star Richard Fleeshman looks unrecognisable in critically acclaimed Netflix series The Sandman.

Richard, who played Craig Harris in the ITV soap between 2002 to 2006, stars as Ken in the hit fantasy series, which is based on the graphic novels by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman.

The series recently launched on Netflix and sees The Boat That Rocked star Tom Sturridge take on the titular role of The Sandman – the personification of dreams who sets out to reclaim what was stolen from him after decades of imprisonment.

Richard looks worlds away from his Coronation Street counterpart in the show, wearing his hair in a bun on the top of his head, paired with black jeans, a polo shirt and a suit jacket.

The actor also adopts an American accent for the role.

He appears as Ken, the partner of the aptly named character Barbie, and a housemate of fellow character Rose Walker, in three episodes of The Sandman.

While there are no spoilers here for how his character is involved in the series, his dreams see him land in trouble with partner Barbie – with him and his fellow housemates playing crucial roles in climatic scenes between The Sandman and Rose.

Richard has appeared in a number of drama series since leaving Coronation Street in 2006, with roles in Call The Midwife, Midsomer Murders and Deepheat.

However, fans may have also spotted that he isn’t the only soap legend to appear in the Sandman too.

EastEnders icon and Strictly Come Dancing star Nina Wadia, who played Zainab Masood in the BBC soap, plays Fate Mother in The Sandman.

Sandra James Young, who has appeared in EastEnders as Fiona Payne and Coronation Street as Selina Rowley, also stars in the series as Rose’s grandmother Unity.

That’s not all, as the a-list cast also includes a whole host of Hollywood names including Doctor Who and Emmerdale star Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, and Harry Potter Professor Lupin actor David Thewlis.

They’re also joined by TV icons Stephen Fry and Sanjeev Bhaskhar, along with Mason Alexander Park, Boyd Holbrook and Game Of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie – to name but a few.

Since its Netflix launch on August 5, 2022, The Sandman has become an instant hit with fans all over the world – with many calling for more episodes of the show after a surprise two-part episode dropped on Friday (August 19).

It has since been hailed by fans on social media as “a masterpiece”, with another saying: “I’m obsessed.”

A third added: “This is incredible.”

Another called for the series to be renewed by Netflix too, commenting: “#renewSandman”
