Dan Walker shares 'tearful' vid as he leaves BBC Breakfast for Channel 5 job

Dan Walker looked to be in tears before his last day at BBC Breakfast, but not all was as it seemed.

The BBC presenter took to Twitter with a short video on Monday (May 16), just one day before he was due to leave the BBC for rival broadcaster Channel 5.

The TV star, 45, is set to take on a lead anchor role on Channel 5’s flagship bulletin news show, 5 News, but he will also present non-news shows across the channel.

However, it seemed the former Strictly star wanted to prank his viewers before he left the station for good.

The clip showed the anchor appearing to be overcome with emotion as he prepared to leave his BBC Breakfast team for new beginnings on Channel 5.

Dan was actually just teasing fans with the hilarious new sad-face filter, which has gone viral on social media sites like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

He revealed his co-host Sally Nugent wanted “nothing to do” with his video in the caption, which read: “My partner @sallynugent wanted absolutely nothing to do with this”.

On the surface, the clip showed suit-sporting Dan sobbing in the Breakfast studio just before broadcast.

Dan said: “Final week of BBC Breakfast. Very sad. Sally doesn’t want to appear on this video, because she said she looks like Groucho Marx. Great times.”

Sally could also be heard at the start of the video as she said in the background: “Let him do it.”

It seemed to suggest her begrudging acceptance of Dan posting the playful video online.

Fans of the former Strictly star sent Dan flocked to the comments to wish him well on his career move, and some were rather emotional.

One wrote: “Predicting real tears tomorrow”.

A second said: “Ah bless! You will be so missed Dan! Such a professional and I will miss your giggles in the morning!”

A third wrote: “Don’t know whether to [laugh emoji] or [cry emoji].”

A fourth added: “you will be missed Dan x x”.

Dan has worked for the BBC for 13 years, where he’s fronted BBC Breakfast for six.

He admitted the decision to leave was tough but the offer from Channel 5 was “too good to turn down”.

He wrote: “I can’t wait to get stuck into the daily news show, but I am also excited about making some great new TV for Channel 5.
