Dancing on Ice 2021 winner Sonny Jay has revealed the special ritual he shared with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that helped him before he won the show.
The radio DJ won the 2021 series of the ITV skating show alongside his professional skating partner Angela Egan – who’s dancing with Happy Mondays star Bez on this year’s series.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Sonny opened up about his bond with show hosts Holly and Phil – and how they helped him out during the series.
The Capital FM host loved chatting to This Morning duo Holly and Phil after his gruelling routines on the ice rink, and they were always there to offer their words of wisdom.
Sonny said: “One thing I do remember from every single live show.
“You’d finish your routine and you’re completely puffed out.
“You’re out of breath and you know that Phil and Holly have just watched your performance backstage before they come back out and refer to the judges.
“And every single time that we’d finish our routine and skate up to Phil and Holly, they’d always used to say to me ‘Well done’, or ‘Great dance’, or ‘That was better than last week’. Do you know what I mean?
“They were the faces that you were so pleased to see because you’re just so out of breath and you just can’t wait for them to talk before you!”
Chatting about the friends he made on the show, Sonny dished on a wild night out he had with his series co-star Denise Van Outen.
Denise kindly invited Sonny and his fiancée Lauren to one of her live cabaret shows at Proud in London, but things took a racy turn for Sonny.
Little did he know that Denise would call his name out and drag him up onto the stage, where he danced with a Marilyn Monroe lookalike in front of the audience.
Sonny said: “She messaged me and said like ‘look I’m doing a show, come along, take Lauren with you. You’ll have a great night. Here’s the menu..’
“I thought ‘Oh great, cabaret, we’ll hear a bit of music, bit of dancing.”
The radio host soon realised that Denise’s show was “the most risqué show” he’s ever been to.
Sonny continued: “It was the most risqué show I’ve ever been to, like genuinely I didn’t know where to look. At one point they nearly had my eye out!
“And then the most embarrassing part was… she came back out [on stage] and went ‘Oh, someone’s in the audience tonight.'”
Sonny thought she was referring to someone else, but unfortunately it wasn’t the case because she was talking about him.
The skating winner continued: “I was thinking ‘she won’t do that in front of everyone’, and then she got me up on stage and she had like this Marlin Monroe lookalike dance and sing round me.”
The DJ went on to say that people in the audience didn’t know who he was, either.
He went on: “And she’s was like ‘the winner of Dancing on Ice, Sonny Jay!’ And everyone was basically like ‘who?'”
Sonny presents Capital Breakfast between 6am and 10am on weekdays alongside Gogglebox star Roman Kemp and Sian Welby.
Dancing on Ice returns to ITV and ITV Hub tonight
