Minder star Dennis Waterman once admitted that he was “really good at doing f*** all” after leaving the hit BBC series New Tricks and moving to Spain.
The late, great TV icon died on May 8, 2022 aged 74 years old, following a two year battle with lung cancer, his ex-wife Patricia Maynard recently revealed.
However in his last years before his death, Dennis admitted in an interview that he was enjoying his new life in Spain and was not actively seeking work.
Instead he said he enjoyed spending time playing golf and living in a new “two up, two down” house in the country, after downsizing from his four bedroom home in the UK, admitting in a past interview with The Mirror that he was “really, really good at doing f*** all”.
He said at the time: “I’m not rushing about looking for work really – I’ll see how far the money goes.
“I’ve found out a remarkable thing about myself is that I’m really, really good at doing f*** all.
“I’ve always sneered at people who have gone into early retirement and thought, ‘what are you going to do?’, but I’ve taken to it like a duck to water.”
Dennis, who is fondly remembered for his roles in TV series including Minder and The Sweeney, also starred in BBC’s New Tricks as Gerry Standing from 2003-2015, before starting a new life in Spain.
In the interview, he had explained that he was enjoying time with his wife Pam Flint, with the couple regularly playing golf and “lolling in the sun, having a splash when it gets too hot”.
The legendary actor died in Spain with wife Pam by his side, with his family releasing a statement saying: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis passed away very peacefully at his home in Spain.
“The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”
Fans and stars from the world of entertainment have since paid tribute to the star, with DIY SOS star Nick Knowles recalling spending time playing golf with Dennis.
He said in a tweet: “I played golf on a tour to Bermuda with Dennis Waterman – I’m not much of a golfer – he was – but it was time spent with him between rounds that were well worth the trip.
“A genuinely lovely guy. RIP.”
