The Hollywood director was notoriously known for his 1980s Flash Gordon film, which included music done by legendary artist Queen.
Mike was also the man behind many critically acclaimed crime dramas, including Get Carter, Pulp, and Croupier.
The movie buff completed his last feature film, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, in 2003.
Mike’s career spanned across the whole industry as he wrote and produced multiple projects throughout the years.
He also made the documentary Queen: Greatest Video Hits 2 in 2003, which was number one in the UK charts in its opening week.
Mike also wrote plays, including Soft Shoe Shuffle (1985), Shooting Stars and Other Heavenly Pursuits (2000).
There was also the radio play King Trash (2004), and his first novel, Watching the Wheels Come Off, which was published in 2010.
Born in Bristol in 1932, Mike first worked as a chartered accountant and then spent two years serving on a Royal Navy minesweeper around fishing ports in the north of England.
He later entered show business as a teleprompter operator on British TV, where he started observing how hit shows were made.
This led the movie tycoon to begin writing scripts and soon could quit his job with the number of commissions he was getting.
Mike rose quickly to become a producer and director and worked on hit series’ including Sunday Break for ABC Television and a documentary called World in Action, for which he made a film about the Vietnam War.
He then wrote, directed and produced two thrillers for ITV Playhouse, Rumour and Suspect.
Mike is survived by his wife, Carol Laws, his sons Ben and Jake, and five grandchildren, Marlon, Honey, Orson, Michael and Gabriel.
