Emmerdale Faith Dingle's tragic cancer storyline inspired by late BGT star

Emmerdale ‘s Sally Dexter has revealed the husband of late Britain’s Got Talent star Tine Humphrey has helped with her final storyline on the ITV soap as her character battles cancer.

Tina won the hearts of the nation in 2010 when she entered the ITV talent competition with her dancing dog Chandi, with the lovable duo making it to the final and finishing in fifth place.

The dog trainer fought the aggressive form of cancer, metastasised melanoma for more than a year before passing away aged 45 in 2017.

Five years later, her photographer husband Steve, 66, revealed that Tina made the heartbreaking decision to swallow a lethal cocktail of drugs to end her life and recalled how Tina’s story inspired Faith Dingle’s storyline.

Sally, who has played the role of Faith since 2017, explained that Steve gave her advice on how to portray the storyline sensitively, with the widow leaving soap producers in tears after sharing details of his wife’s tragic passing.

The fan-favourite character has decided to end her own life after battling cancer and will slip away in scenes that will air this week.

Sally, 62, told The Sun: ‘We were all extremely moved by Steve’s story. I only hope we have done as much justice to the story as we could.’

“At the outset of telling this story we agreed all sides of this debate needed to be heard and respected,” she added.

Steve and Tina met in 2015 and got engaged two weeks after meeting, eventually tying the knot one year later.

Tina decided to end her own life and passed away aged 45 in 2017

One week before they said their vows, Tina was diagnosed with cancer after discovering a mole on her back which had changed shape.

Speaking after her Tina’s death, Steve said: “I am devastated that she is gone, but I’m happy that she is no longer suffering and is at peace.

“I miss her so much and find it hard to believe that the shattered pieces of my heart will ever begin to heal, but I know they will because she lives on in me and always will.

“I love her so much. She was, and is, my person.”
