BAFTA stands for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and is a world-leading independent arts charity based in London.

Talking about its work, the BAFTA website states: “Our vision is a world where everyone’s life is culturally and creatively enriched through excellent work in film, games and television.

“Our mission is to bring the very best work in film, games and television to public attention, and support the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally.

“We do this by identifying and celebrating excellence, discovering, inspiring and nurturing new talent, and enabling learning and creative collaboration.”

The EE BAFTA Film Awards are held annually by the charity to celebrate British and International contributions to film, in a variety of award categories.

The first ceremony was held in 1949, with the iconic theatre mask statue created by American artist Mitzi Cunliffe.

The ceremony’s first statue was presented to Charlie Chaplin, who was honoured as an Academy Fellow, and since then has been awarded to stars from across the film industries throughout the decades.

Categories that stars of the screen and behind the camera can be nominated for include Leading Actor/Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film, Best Animation and many more.

The EE BAFTA Film Awards 2022 will be hosted by none other than Hollywood film star Rebel Wilson, while stars AJ Odudu and Tom Allen will host all the action from the red carpet.

Speaking about Rebel Wilson’s upcoming hosting role, BAFTA’s chief executive Amanda Berry said: “Rebel has stolen the show at several previous film awards, and we’re hugely excited to see her bring her fantastic charisma and humour to the whole show.”

Rebel also confirmed that she cannot wait to host the highly anticipated awards ceremony, saying in a statement: “It’s going to be so much fun!”

She added: “So basically, I’ll just be there to hang out with Dame Judi Dench and together we’ll both try and bond with Daniel Craig. And yes, I do mean ‘bond’.

“This show will be an anniversary celebration of some important British film franchises such as Harry Potter and not such as Cats. Everybody’s going to love it, I’m sure!”
