GMB's Charlotte Hawkins teases 'rivalry' between Kate Middleton and Prince William

Good Morning Britain star Charlotte Hawkins said there could be a new “rivalry” between Prince William and Kate Middleton at Kensington Palace – over rugby.

The ITV presenter teased the royal rugby rivalry whilst delivering the latest royal news on Wednesday’s edition of GMB.

It comes as Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, was unveiled as the Patron of English Rugby – and The Rugby Football Union.

The duchess is replacing Prince Harry, who previously held the two important sporting roles, meaning she’s been given two of his old patronages.

However, Kate’s hubby Prince William holds the title of Vice Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, there could be some healthy competition between the royal couple over their respective rugby nations.

Addressing Kate’s new job on GMB, Charlotte said: “The Duchess of Cambridge has been given two of Prince Harry’s old patronages.

“She has become Patron of the Rugby Football League and of the Rugby Football Union. Kensington Palace said they align with her longstanding passion for sport.”

Joking at their future rugby clashes, Charlotte added: “But don’t forget that her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, is actually Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, so in direct competition now.

“Could be rugby wars at the palace, who knows?”

Announcing the news on Twitter, Kate said she is thrilled to support “two fantastic organisations who are committed to harnessing the power that sport can have in bringing communities together and helping individuals flourish.”

Alongside her statement, the duchess could be seen dressed in her excerise clothes as she held a rugby ball in the Kensington Palace grounds.

William as been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, and his rugby lover brother Harry had been given the roles from the Queen.

He had originally wanted to keep the positions when he stepped down from royal duties, but he was later stripped of the duties.

The Chief of the Rugby Football League, Ralph Rummer, said: “We are truly honoured by the appointment of The Duchess of Cambridge as the Rugby Football League’s Royal Patron.

‘We are delighted to welcome her as we prepare to host Men’s, Women’s, Wheelchair and Physical Disability Rugby League World Cups in England this autumn.”
