GMB's Richard Madeley sparks uproar with 'embarrassing' and 'inappropriate' Ukraine joke

Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley has caused a stir with viewers after making an “inappropriate” joke regarding the Ukrainian war.

On Wednesday (March 9), Richard caused a stir with fans and received a tonne of backlash after he made an awkward joke about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The hosts’ joke came after the news that McDonald’s, Starbucks and Coca Cola had all confirmed that they would stop trading in Russia due to the current war on Ukraine.

McDonald’s had announced that it would be temporarily closing its 850 restaurants in Russia, while Starbucks would lose 100 coffee shops.

Though as Richard discussed the news with co-star Susanna Reid he joked about it being a “no fry zone”.

He said: “I also have to say congratulations…the British tabloids get a lot of criticism and stick.

“But we do have the finest headline writers in the world I think, and I love the headlines and they are all saying the same thing this morning.

“The McDonald’s story pulling out of Russia, they’re calling a no fry zone.”

Richard laughed at the pun joke while Susanna rolled her eyes and looked less than impressed.

GMB viewers also didn’t see the funny side and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Richard’s remark.

One fan tweeted: “So @richardm56 aka Alan Partridge is now making jokes about the war #gmb @GMB #cringe.”

A second added: “As Richard Madeley just made a joke during a war report #GMB.” (sic)

While a third penned: “Richard Madeley is practically salivating as he discusses the war, it’s disgusting.

A fourth fumed: “Inappropriate Richard Madeley strikes again @GMB #gmb.”

Another scribed: “Richard Madeley just plain embarrassing.”

This comes after Richard ruffled the feathers of GMB viewers once more, as, on Monday (March 6), he was judged on his chat with Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko.

The MP appeared via video link from Kyiv and had initially fled to get her kids to safety but returned to fight.

However, Richard was slammed due to his brash question, when he asked: “You are a cultured, civilised human being, you’re a democratically elected MP, you’re a mother of three as we said, and you now have an AK47 propped up in the corner and you’re said you’re prepared to use it.

“Can I just ask you about that last bit? Are you really capable as the person as I’ve just described, the person looking down a barrel of a rifle and shooting somebody dead?”

Richard angered some GMB viewers with many calling for him to “get off” the programme.
