Fuming Gogglebox fans have demanded that Mary Killen is kicked off the show after her comments about Boris Johnson in the latest episode.
Controversy bubbled online came after a clip aired showing her and partner Giles Wood sitting down in front of Susanna Reid’s must-watch interview with the Prime Minister on Good Morning Britain earlier this week.
As Susanna grilled Johnson on the cost of living, Breakfast TV host raised the perilous example of a pensioner who had cut down their intake to just one meal a day to save home, and took the bus to keep themselves warm.
Elsie, 77, had seen her gas and electric bills had risen from £17 to £85 a month.
But Mary appeared to stick up for the Tory Prime Minister as she was seen saying: “I am very sorry for Elsie but Susanna is making out it is Boris’ fault and like he doesn’t care.”
A bewildered Giles then asked her: “Whose fault is it?,” and Mary replied: “Well it is the global situation.”
But the comments enraged many loyal Gogglebox viewers, as one wrote: “Get rid of Mary.”
A more lengthy post by another read: “Can someone remind Mary that Boris Johnson runs this country and it absolutely IS his problem and his fault that an elderly women is riding a bus to keep warm bcos her heating bill has risen more than 4x!”
While another said it had changed their opinion on the couple permanently, and penned: “Don’t know why I’m surprised Mary and Giles are Tories but now I know for sure, I can’t find them funny in the same way anymore, bye.”
Others, however, praised the Channel 4 show for showing a range of political opinions.
One said: “I agree with Twitter that Mary is out of touch and I certainly don’t agree with her. But the beauty of Gogglebox is diversity and able to express opinion, even if it is different from your own. She and Giles can’t be axed because you disagree with them.”
