Love Island star Molly-Mae Hague, 22, is finally making a return to social media after taking some time off following some rather controversial comments.
The influencer made comments while on the podcast Diary Of A CEO, which is hosted by Dragon’s Den star Steven Bartlett. She appeared to ignore the barriers to success for many people through wealth and social inequalities.
The Pretty Little Thing Creative Director said: “Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day” and “if you want something enough, you can achieve it”.
Her comments then picked up attention on Twitter, where users labelled them as ‘tone-deaf’ and ‘insensitive’.
Following the backlash, Molly-Mae took a break from social media for some time to recuperate, although she has now issued an apology to fans who ‘misunderstood’ her comments.
How many followers has Molly-Mae lost?
Molly-Mae’s comments have, as of January 11, 2022, cost her some 40,000 followers on Instagram, according to CapitalFM.
However, despite the huge decline in followers, she still has 6.2 million fans checking out her content on the social media platform, at the time of writing.
The video’s initial viral status cost her 20,000 followers, and that number continued to grow as the days went by.
In an apology “to people who have been affected negatively or misunderstood”, she said: “I wanted to come back online today as normal but I feel like before I do I just wanted to say this,”
“When I say or post anything online, it is never with malice or ill intent. I completely appreciate that things can affect different people in different ways however I just want to stress that I would never intend to hurt or upset anyone by anything that I say or do.”
“I apologise to the people that have been affected negatively or misunderstood the meaning of what I said in the podcast, the intentions of the podcast were only to tell my story and inspire from my own experience.”
She wrapped up her post by saying: “Love to you all, always x.”
In other Molly-Mae news, rumours also circulated this week that her boyfriend, the boxer and fellow Love Island star Tommy Fury, had proposed to her while in New York.
Fans think they have picked up some clues from the surprise trip, including a video clip of the pair kissing while strangers appear to celebrate in the direction of the pair.
However, it is entirely possible people were just jumping up and down as they ushered in the new year and the pair have not spoken out about any engagement news.
In November, the Sun reported that Tommy has been shopping for rings. A source told the publication that: “Tommy has put in a call to a designer jeweller about engagement rings for Molly-Mae. He hasn’t decided when he’s actually going to pop the question yet but he knows what he’s looking for.
“There’s no doubt in either of their minds that they’re in this for the long haul.”
