I'm A Celeb's Charlene White was in 'impossible position' as Matt Hancock entered jungle

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star Charlene White “tried to be impartial” as Matt Hancock entered the jungle.

Charlene White said she “walked a tightrope” to be impartial every day and feared she could end up losing her job as the former Health Secretary joined the campers.

The ITV newsreader and Loose Women presenter, 42, broke down in tears as she explained how much of the fun drained away from her I’m A Celebrity adventure as she was in daily “turmoil” about doing and saying the right things.

And Charlene, who was the first contestant voted out of the show on Friday night, also tearfully admitted she regrets not fully explaining her reasons for refusing to sleep in her designated bed as this contributed to her exit.

Speaking on Matt’s first entrance into camp, Charlene said: “I was shocked when he walked in but also not shocked.

“Immediately, I was doing the mental arithmetics in my head and it had stopped at that point for me just being there and having a laugh and having a joke – that kind of finished when Matt came.

“Because I have interviewed enough of the families who have lost loved ones during the pandemic, I am one of those.

“I spoke to so many families who had lost dads, mums, granddads, grandparents, as soon as he walked in I thought… I’m going to be walking a tightrope here.”

Charlene explained that her job was at the forefront of her mind as she didn’t want people to think she was being “too sympathetic” towards Matt.

She added that she needed to remain impartial and added that ultimately, she was left incredibly concerned as to whether or not she would still be able to do her job upon her exit.

One of the main reasons Charlene is perceived to have struggled to win votes and ended up being first out was due to a row over the sleeping situation – dubbed RV-Gate by fans and even hosts Ant and Dec who also criticised her decision on social media.

As Deputy camp leader to Hancock, Charlene was supposed to sleep in a bed next to him in the motorhome. But she refused on the first night apparently because of a spider and then continued to refuse which appeared to annoy other contestants as it forced one of them onto a hammock which left them with back pain.

In reality, the move by Charlene was again linked to her job and impartiality but this was only illustrated minutes before she left the camp on ITV and she regrets not being clearer.

She explained that some of her campmates knew how “uncomfortable it was”, but she said her job was constantly on her mind.

Charlene said: “All that was on my mind was that the pandemic inquiry is still live, you have grieving families that will be sitting there thinking ‘Why is Matt Hancock doing this programme when we still have unanswered questions? We are still grieving, we’re still hurt’.”

The star explained she felt her integrity would be gone and she wanted to make sure she came out with her job in tact.

I’m A Celeb airs at 9pm on ITV.
