Kim Kardashian breaks silence on claim she damaged Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress

Kim Kardashian, 40, has responded about her Marilyn Monroe controversy.

The Kardashians star became the talk of the Met Gala 2022 red carpet after she confessed to nearly losing 20 pounds in order to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s infamous “naked” dress.

Late Hollywood legend Marilyn wore the notorious dress in 1964 to sing Happy Birthday to then-president John F Kennedy.

Addressing the commotion, Kim appeared on the Today show where speaks about the allegations for the first time.

Responding to host Hoda Kotb, who asked: “We keep seeing stuff like, ‘The dress is ruined’… All of that is not true?”

Kim replied: “No. Ripley’s [and I] worked together so well; there were handlers in gloves that put it on me.

“It was such a process… I showed up to the red carpet in a robe and slippers, and I put the dress on on the bottom of the carpet, went up the stairs … I probably had it on for three minutes, four minutes.”

Kim added: “I respect [Monroe]. I understand how much this dress means to American history.

“And with the theme [of the Met Gala] being American, I thought, ‘What’s more American than Marilyn Monroe singing happy to the President of the United States?’”

Following the controversy, photos emerged on social media sites like TikTok, which revealed the dress to show missing rhinestones and ripped material.

Even designer Bob Mackie spoke publicly, condemning the SKIMS founder’s decision to wear the notorious dress.

In their defence of the star, a spokesperson for Ripley’s said last week: “From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in.”

Kim also talked about her controversial weight loss for the event, saying: “I looked at it like a role. And I really wanted to wear this dress. It was really important to me.

“It actually taught me a lot about my lifestyle and my health. I’m down 21 pounds now.”
