Love Island alumni Marcel Somerville has opened up to showbiz reporter Carly Hacon about his time in the villa and his struggles throughout the show.
In a Facebook Live interview, Marcel discussed his experience on the show and he has previously called out Love Island as black and mixed race contestants have been the last to be picked during the initial coupling process.
His fellow Blazin’ Squad members were left fuming after the first episode aired: “They were planning on getting a helicopter in, commando’ing down, grabbing me, flying me off and looking away like commando [style]. Do you know what? I think this season they made a conscious effort to make that not a possibility.”

This year, Love Island left the couples down to viewers choice and fans could vote for who they wanted together via the app, a move which Marcel appreciated.

He said: “I think it was a good choice [this year] because it let all of the contestants start on the same foot. For me, I’ll say it now, that first day knocked me back. Mentally, I was like: ‘What am I going to do? I’m not going to survive this, how am I going to get through this?’ All the things like that.”
Marcel continued: “It was literally the worst day of my life. All these things going through your brain, in an environment with no-one that you really know, you don’t really know who to talk to about the situation.
“There’s producers that are there, but at the same time you don’t want to look like you’re not ready to be on the show. You’ve just got to brave it, got to front it.”
To make the best out of a bad situation, Marcel gave himself a pep talk and managed to perk himself up.
“I said to myself: ‘Marce, pretend you’re on holiday and just have a good time. If you’re here for a week, you’ve had a nice week holiday,’ that’s the mindset I gave myself.
“For the rest of that week I was just chilling, doing my own thing, and for some reason everyone started drawing towards me.”
Marcel then commented on the fact that Jacques has just left the villa “for his own mental wellbeing,” and said that the villa “can literally mess with your mind”.
Luckily, Marcel was able to “talk himself round” and “get into the right mindset,” which meant he made it all the way to the final and placed fourth with Gabby Allen.
