Matt Hancock shuts down I'm A Celeb 'bullying' claims despite Ofcom backlash

Matt Hancock has shut down any of the “bullying” claims from his I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! stint.

When the MP, 44, entered the I’m A Celeb jungle last month, he was at the centre of a huge backlash from viewers of the beloved ITV1 reality show.

And when he met with his campmates, they weren’t best impressed either.

With the likes of Sue Cleaver, Chris Moyles, Charlene White and Boy George questioning Matt over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and then breaking social distancing guidance – bullying rumours soon spiralled.

As the celebrity campmates quizzed and questioned Matt about his “failings” as the former health secretary, fans quickly took to Twitter – and Ofcom – to complain about alleged bullying going on in camp.

Speaking about getting grilled by his campmates in the jungle, Matt has now opened up to Mail+.

When asked about the “bullying” claims, the MP told the paper: “I didn’t feel bullied in the jungle. I felt people asked the questions respectfully.

“They challenged me directly and I respect that. It was a lot more collegiate than it looked on TV.”

Boy George was one of the celebrities accused of “bullying” after he confronted Matt and dubbed him as “slippery”.

Viewers sent thousands of complaints to regulator Ofcom over the claims from Matt’s campmates.

But upon his jungle exit, Boy George addressed the claims when he said: “I treated him [Matt] with absolute respect. I said what I needed to say and I made some fun digs but there was zero awkwardness. He appreciated my directness.”

Since coming out of the jungle, Matt has been seen kissing Boy George on the cheek after the 80s pop icon asked if Matt hated him.

Speaking of his bond with the Culture Club singer, Matt told Mail+ that he thinks George is “wonderful” and touched on their “grown up, respectful discussions”.

He went on to say: “I count him as a friend and I hope he does me too at the end.”
