Mel B posted a sweet snap as she visited her father’s grave after recently being awarded an MBE.
The singer was amongst other celebs to me named on the Queen’s New Year Honours list where she received an MBE for her services to charitable causes and for helping vulnerable women.
In the past, Mel, 46, has been open about the abuse she suffered during her ten year marriage with ex-husband Stephen Belafonte which ended in 2017.
However, the film-producer himself has always denied he was ever abusive towards the singer.
The star shared a photo on her Instagram page of her at her father’s grave Mel said she’d told her dad that she’d been awarded her MBE.
She wrote: “This was the moment I told my dad about my MBE.
“On his death bed I promised him I would leave my abusive marriage. He gave me that strength.”
She added: “He would be so proud I’m overwhelmed honoured and grateful and as patron of @womens_aid I will NEVER stop this fight to #stopabuse.”
The Spice Girls singer added the hashtags: “#itsnotyourfault #silencenomore #womensupportwomen #speakup #youarenotalone #reclaimthesestreets #yourlifematters #togetherwearestronger.”
Fans and fellow celebs flooded to the comments to support the star.
Singer Alexandra Burke wrote: “Proud of you,” as Heidi Klum added a red heart emoji.
Fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton said: “Love you.”
While a fan commented: “He would be so proud of you, Melanie. We all are.”
As another said: “Well done, Melanie! Your father would be proud, no doubt! Love you so much, we support you forever! #TeamScary”
Mel’s dad died just two weeks before she left her marriage as he passed away from myeloma cancer aged 63 back in 2017.
A year after her divorce was finalised, Mel became a patron for domestic violence survivors’ charity, Women’s Aid, in November 2018.
Mel released a statement when she received the MBE news saying: “This has taken so long to sink in because it means so much to me.
“To go through such dark times and then to start coming into the light and speaking out for myself and other women has been at times incredibly painful but also unbelievably empowering.”
She said she felt she was accepting the award on behalf of women who have gone through something similar to her.
